When No. 9 Miami enters Lane Stadium on Saturday, it will mark the 14th time that a team ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 poll has visited Virginia Tech. Those 13 games include four visits from the Hurricanes.


No. 10 Tech 31, No. 2 Miami 7 | Nov. 1, 2003

The game: Hokie defensive backs come up with four turnovers and score two touchdowns as Tech ends Miami’s 39-game regular-season winning streak.

Big names: Tech’s Eric Green, DeAngelo Hall, Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick; Miami’s Antrel Rolle, Kevin Everett, Kellen Winslow and Brock Berlin.

Quotable: “I don’t think the better team won.” — Miami’s Jarrett Payton “They were talking trash while they were here, they were talking trash before they got here, so we just had to show ’em and shut ’em up. I can’t stand Miami.” — Tech’s Kevin Jones

The game: Gino Torretta, who would go on to win the Heisman, throws three TD passes.

The game: Tech has a chance to tie the score with 6:04 left, but Ernest Wilford drops the 2-point pass in the end zone. Miami clinches Rose Bowl berth.

Big names: Miami’s Ken Dorsey, Clinton Portis, Phillip Buchanon, Jerome McDougle and Edward Reed; Tech’s Ben Taylor, Andre Davis, Jones and Green.

The game: Marcus Vick fumbles the ball away four times, throws two picks and is sacked four times.

Big names: Tech’s Darryl Tapp, Jeff King and David Clowney; Miami’s Brandon Meriweather and Devin Hester.

Randy King wrote: “The worst home loss since a 43-23 thrashing to Miami in 1992 effectively ripped the petals from the Hokies’ dreams of playing in the Jan. 3 Rose Bowl.”
