As Ju-Ju Clayton spoke with the media following Virginia Tech's scrimmage last Saturday, Hokies starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor strolled past the scene, broke into a huge grin and started chanting: "Ju-Ju ... Ju-Ju!"
Yes, Ju-Ju is the guy.
After meeting with the coaching staff Monday, Tech head coach Frank Beamer announced Monday afternoon that Clayton has been named the Hokies' No. 2 quarterback. Clayton, a 6-foot, 215-pound Richmond native, beat out fellow redshirt freshman Marcus Davis of Virginia Beach for the backup spot behind Taylor.
The 6-4, 230-pound Davis will work at wide receiver for the final week of spring drills.
Clayton, who ran the scout-team offense last season, entered spring practice with a huge edge on playbook knowledge and reading defenses. Davis, who was a wideout last fall before undergoing shoulder surgery, was able to make a strong run at the job because of his athleticism.
Davis, who runs a 4.5-second 40, ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run in last Saturday's scrimmage.
"We still feel that Marcus has the capabilities to be an excellent quarterback," Beamer said. "At this very moment, we feel that Ju-Ju is ahead of him and we're encouraging Marcus to work hard on his arm strength this summer and continue to throw, and we'll see where that goes.
"Coming out of [First Colonial] high school, I felt like he could be a very good quarterback and I still feel that way. But a couple of his runs on Saturday also showed that we need to get him on the field somewhere and we're going to work on that part of it."
Tech wraps up spring drills with its annual Maroon-White game at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lane Stadium. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
