BLACKSBURG -- Frank Beamer doesn't know how to sign on to the Internet.

Shoot, "YouTube" used to be "you who?" to Virginia Tech's football coach.

Not any longer, though.

Incensed that all but a couple of plays from the Hokies' spring scrimmage last Friday quickly surfaced on "YouTube," one of the Internet's most popular landing spots for video clips, Beamer is expected to lay down the law to all spectators before Saturday's 11 a.m. scrimmage at Lane Stadium.

"I think Coach Beamer will take his bullhorn and tell the fans please don't record our scrimmage and post it on the Internet," said John Ballein, director of Tech football operations and resident henchman.

Usually, Ballein's lieutenants peruse the crowd and make certain that no one is recording the scrimmages on video cameras. They didn't do it last Friday, and the program got burned, Beamer said.

"I just don't understand that," Beamer said Wednesday. "Why would somebody come and put our scrimmage up because it's all basically Tech people. Usually, you think it's Tech people there in the stadium and why would you want to show somebody else your stuff?

"I just don't understand that. Why do we want to show Alabama [Tech's Sept. 5 season-opening opponent] our scrimmage? That beats the heck out of me."

Prolonging the battle

Following last Friday's scrimmage, Beamer said the plan was to settle Monday on who was going to be quarterback Tyrod Taylor's primary backup -- Ju-Ju Clayton or Marcus Davis -- for the rest of spring workouts. However, the final call now won't be made until after Saturday's scrimmage.

"I decided we needed to go another week," Beamer said. "What's happened is you've put your offense in and put your defense in, and I don't like to slow down the defense, so it's just lot of stuff going on. So we felt like we needed another week to make a good evaluation."

"Both guys have got ability ... both of them are just thinking too much right now. We've really got to come on with our execution the next [six] practices."

Beamer wants to settle the issue between the two redshirt freshmen so one of them can take all the No. 2 reps in the final four spring workouts.

More rest for the weary?

Offensive line coach Curt Newsome said he thinks he has eight guys who can figure into this fall's group, and he's hoping to add at least one other member to the mix.

That's good news for the three returning starters -- tackles Ed Wang and Blake DeChristopher, and left guard Sergio Render -- who had to be iron men last season because of the lack of capable backups.

"I think Coach Newsome is really trying to push some of the younger guys to learn the plays because it would be nice to get some fresh linemen in during the game to give the starters a break," DeChristopher said. "We were out there the whole time last year."

Wang smiled at the thought of getting an occasional break.

"I feel like that would help a little bit, give some people some blow when they need it," Wang said.

Tech tidbits

The O-line's improved athleticism has been readily apparent this spring. Quizzed on that topic, DeChristopher couldn't resist taking a good-natured shot at 6-foot-4, 326-pound redshirt sophomore William Alvarez, who's been working at left guard. "Everyone looks athletic ... except Alvarez," DeChristopher said. "Just kidding ... I like busting his chops. He's doing good." ... Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Justin Young has decided to transfer. The 6-3, 286-pound Young entered spring as the No. 4 nose tackle. Young spurned a possible move to the O-line before making his decision. ... Senior free safety Kam Chancellor, who intercepted a pass in last Friday's scrimmage, had a pick and a 37-yard return for a touchdown in Wednesday's mini-scrimmage.
