Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer decided in August that he wasn't going to play a game of musical quarterbacks this season.
Now, he may not have any choice.
In the wake of left ankle sprains sustained by Nos. 1 and 2 QBs Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon in Saturday's 30-20 loss at Florida State, there will be two new names taking practice reps today and Wednesday.
Cory Holt, a fifth-year senior who played the final 20 minutes-plus at FSU, and junior tight end Greg Boone will be running the offense the next two days for the Hokies (5-3, 2-2 ACC), who resume action a week from Thursday against 25th-ranked Maryland (6-2, 3-1) at Lane Stadium.
Tech head athletic trainer Mike Goforth said Monday that Taylor and Glennon will remain in protective boots until Thursday or Friday, possibly even Saturday.
"Right now, we don't know if either one of them is going to be able to play," Beamer said Monday.
If neither can play, Holt will draw the first start of his college career -- at any position -- against the Terrapins. Boone, who began his Tech career as a quarterback before being moved to tight end before the 2006 season, will be the backup in such a scenario. Jeff Beyer, a junior walk-on who has been helping the Hokies with sideline signaling, figures to be the third QB. The next guy would be freshman Ju-Ju Clayton, who has been running the Hokies' scout team this season.
"Clayton is a freshman kid, but at this point you don't want to use a year," Beamer said, referring to Clayton's redshirt situation. "We'll probably have him out there in case of an emergency."
Holt, who hadn't taken any QB reps in practice since early September, did an admirable job in his surprise role against FSU, leading the offense on a 46-yard drive for a touchdown that enabled the Hokies to pull to 27-20 with 8:26 left in the game.
Holt was 3-for-4 passing on the drive, completing two passes to Boone for 11 and 13 yards, then finding tight end Andre Smith on a 4-yard touchdown pass.
"I really thought [Holt] did a great job under the conditions and under how much work he really did get at quarterback. He just hadn't been doing that much here lately," Beamer said.
"We're fortunate we had Cory the other night. He gave us a chance to win the football game. Having that experience and being around, no question, we're fortunate to have Cory."
Still control destiny
Despite the fact they've lost two straight ACC games and their 5-3 record marks their worst start since 1992, the Hokies still remain strong contenders in the Coastal Division race. Win out, and they capture the division.
"We control what happens and we've got an opportunity here," said Beamer before Monday afternoon's team meeting. "We've got three out of four at home now and I expect us to come out stronger than ever."
On the move again
Jahre Cheeseman, who was moved to fullback a few weeks ago, is back at tailback, Beamer said.
"We hope to get a lift right there," said Beamer of the junior, who carried six times for 84 yards last season in a 27-3 victory at Georgia Tech.
More out of whack
Losing and injuries aren't the only things wrong in Blacksburg these days. Beamer's Web site also is slipping a bit. The site had Cheeseman moving to tight end instead of tailback on a coaches' report posted Sunday night.
"It's on there that Cheeseman is going to get reps at tight end?" Beamer said. "That's wrong. It's the first time that Web site has ever been wrong. Sorry about that, gang."
