You couldn't really say that Virginia Tech's football recruiting of Pulaski County High prospect Nubian Peak was a whirlwind romance. Whirlwinds aren't that fast.
Peak had no more than hit 4.28 seconds in the 40-yard dash at an on-campus prospect camp this past weekend than an offer was in the works.
Less than a day later, Tech called back. Peak, a rising senior and a multi-sport athlete who is a running back and occasional slot receiver for the Cougars, didn't require much of a sales pitch.
"Definitely an easy choice for me and my family to make," he said. "I've always been a Tech fan. It wasn't a brain-wracker."
Peak is the Hokies fifth 2009 recruit. Tech is expected to award about 12 scholarships for next year's recruiting class.
A 5-foot-11, 185-pounder, Peak had a previous offer from Ohio University.
"But I think that Richmond and James Madison were going to offer me," he said. "They backed off when they heard about Tech."
Peak ran for 1,349 yards and averaged 26.9 yards per on 11 pass receptions. He also averaged 18.8 per kick return. He had 17 touchdowns as a junior.
Peak has been told he was recruited as an athlete, meaning that his future could include playing any one of a number of positions.
Peak is also an outstanding basketball player. He plans to continue to play that sport his senior year.
"The Tech coaches said they liked me playing basketball because of what it can do for my quickness and agility," he said.
Peak is the second New River Valley athlete to recruit to commit to Tech this week. Giles place-kicker Cody Journell was the other.
