DAVIE, Fla. -- Some innocent horseplay on a personal watercraft in the Atlantic Ocean could result in Virginia Tech being without standout senior linebacker Vince Hall in Thursday night's Orange Bowl.
Hall missed his second straight day of practice Tuesday because of a badly bruised left knee and is listed as questionable for the game.
Hall, whose 92 tackles rank second on the team, sustained the injury during the team's beach outing Sunday.
"They were playing around in the water and Vince went to take a step and banged it a little bit," said Mike Goforth, director of athletic training at Tech. "It's real stiff right now. I'm not going to push him at this point. We're just being [cautious] about it."
Redshirt junior Brett Warren has gotten most of the reps the past two days in practice. Warren started four games this season when Hall broke his forearm and wrist in Tech's win at Clemson on Oct. 6.
"We're hoping that Vince Hall can play," Tech coach Frank Beamer said Tuesday. "But we also have a lot of confidence in Brett Warren. We'll see how Vince feels [today] and then how he's doing the day of the game. It's a night game, so that will give us some extra healing time."
Glamour matchup
Judging from their questions to coaches and players, many media members appear to think that the game will be decided by the matchup that pits Kansas' scoring offense, ranked second nationally, and Tech's No. 2 scoring defense.
Jayhawks star cornerback Aqib Talib has no qualms with that assessment.
"That's what it is," Talib said. "We [KU defense] are secondary to the game and we'll take it. It's the matchup everyone wants to see and we don't feel overshadowed."
Dancing stars
Tech coaches hope to dance in the bowels of Dolphin Stadium late Thursday night. The coaches have danced in the locker room following the team's past several wins.
"The coaches, they're some characters, man, it's crazy," senior safety D.J. Parker said.
When asked who is the better dancer between Beamer and Foster, a grinning Parker said: "I have to give it to Bud. Frank has a little, good two-step with him as well. I think Frank is stuck back in the day a little bit."
Jayhawk jingles
Brandon McAnderson, Kansas' leading rusher with 1,050 yards, is a load to bring down at 235 pounds. "We know we've got to gang tackle him," Tech linebacker Xavier Adibi said. "If you're going to tackle him, you've got to be committed to that tackle or he's going to embarrass you." ... Kansas has one player from Virginia, backup tight end Mark Jones from Norfolk. Jones' father, Leslie, played football at Tech. ... Before losing to Missouri in its Nov. 24 regular-season finale, Kansas had trailed 27 minutes, 15 seconds all season.
Quick kicks
For the first time in years, Tech will not sell its entire allotment of tickets for a bowl game. The school figures to fall about 2,000 short of selling the 17,500 tickets allotted by the bowl. Kansas has sold its allotment. ... Following Tuesday's practice, Tech seniors visited Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where they handed out souvenirs. ... After four straight days of temperatures in the 80s, today's forecast calls for a high of 59 degrees and a low of 40. Temperature for kickoff is expected to be in the high 50s with a 20 percent chance of rain.
