- Update: The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Tech wide receiver Justin Harper was among the other students at Harris' apartment
Updated: 11:54 a.m.
Blacksburg police Capt. Bruce Bradbery said police haven't talked with Virginia Tech cornerback Macho Harris' father and would not say if the account police were given of the incident was the same as the one reported by the elder Harris to a Richmond Times-Dispatch reporter.
"What we were told is investigative information and not subject to release," he said.
Bradbery also wouldn't confirm the identity of the three Virginia Tech students he has said were in the apartment or whether Harris' younger brother was also there.
"It is the policy of the Blacksburg Police Department not to name the victims of violent crime for their protection," he said.
Bradbery declined to say if police have identified a motive or a suspect, citing an ongoing investigation.
Earlier
BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech cornerback Macho Harris confirmed Tuesday that his Chasewood Downs apartment was hit by a couple of gunshots fired by unknown suspects early Sunday morning.According to a release issued Monday by the Blacksburg Police Department, there was evidence that the multi-unit apartment building in which Harris resides was hit with gunshots from two different guns.
Police recovered evidence that seven rounds were fired from a 9mm handgun, at least two of which struck Harris’ apartment. One shotgun blast struck the face of the building.
A sliding glass patio door was shot out in Harris’ apartment, and there were bullet holes in the wall and ceiling.
“The incident that took place at my apartment was a random situation,” Harris told reporters Tuesday night following Tech’s practice. “I don’t have any enemies or nothing like that. The shootings were very random, and the police are looking into it.
“That’s all I’ve got to say about it. Any questions about Miami?” added Harris, referring to the 10th-ranked Hokies’ opponent this Saturday in Lane Stadium.
Tech coach Frank Beamer briefly addressed the incident at his Tuesday afternoon media conference.
“From what I know, I don’t think any of our people are at fault here,” Beamer said. “It’s under police investigation and that’s where I stop talking about it until the police investigation is done.”
No one was injured in the shootings.
Beware of ’Canes
Miami will come to Blacksburg on the heels of two straight home losses, including a stunning 48-0 beat-down by Virginia in the program’s final game at the Orange Bowl last Saturday. Nonetheless, Beamer is plenty wary of the ’Canes.
“I think it’s worrisome … a game that you had better watch out,” said Beamer, whose club has been tabbed a 17-point favorite over Miami. “You know what kind of team Florida State has and this Miami crowd beat them [37-29 on Oct. 20]. This is a dangerous, good football team that’s just had a couple of tough weeks. I’ve played Miami too many times, and I know what they’re coming with.”
Strong kudos
FSU coach Bobby Bowden told reporters Sunday that his club’s loss at Tech was one of the three worst physical whippings suffered by any of his teams of his long coaching career. “I hope Virginia Tech is sore a little bit,” Bowden added, laughing.
When asked about Bowden’s comment, Beamer said: “I told our team [Monday] that’s what I’m proud of. We’re a tough bunch, we play hard, relentless. I think all those things kind of came out in that game, and then for Coach Bowden to emphasize how their guys were beat up … yeah, I thought that was a pretty good compliment.”
Looking ahead
Win or lose on Saturday, the Hokies are assured of playing for the ACC’s Coastal Division title on Nov. 24, when they face Virginia in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers (9-2, 6-1) are idle this week, a luxury that will allow them extra time to tweak their game plan and heal any nagging injuries for Tech.
Edge UVa?
“Yeah, I think so,” Beamer said. “That’s the way the schedule is and I don’t worry too much about things you can’t control. I would think getting well and having extra time to prepare would be a help for them.”
Tech tidbits
Saturday’s contest will be the final home game for 20 Tech seniors, who have a chance to become the first class in Tech history to post 10 wins in four consecutive seasons. “It means a lot, a real big achievement,” senior offensive tackle Duane Brown said. … Senior linebacker Vince Hall, who has been sidelined since breaking two bones in his right arm and wrist Oct. 6 vs. Clemson, will return to the lineup Saturday. “Yeah, man, I’m ready,” said Hall, a first-team All-ACC selection last season. “It’s been hard sitting back not being able to do nothing. At least I can finish the season out.” … Miami needs to win one of its final two games — at Tech and at Boston College (Nov. 24) — to qualify for a bowl game. It has been 10 years since the ’Canes didn’t go bowling. … Beamer announced that redshirt freshman defensive end Steven Friday has been suspended for Saturday’s game. Friday was charged with disorderly conduct by Blacksburg police for his part in a fight that broke out early Sunday morning outside a downtown nightclub.
