Georgia was always Bobby Massie’s favorite team as a youngster in Appomattox, but, when it came time to pick a college, there was one thing Virginia Tech had that Georgia didn’t.
"They’re [the Hokies] just home," said Massie, who made an oral commitment to the Hokies on Sunday as he wrapped up an official campus visit. "Georgia is eight hours away. I’ve got no ties to Georgia. Everybody I know is from Virginia and this area."
Massie, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound offensive and defensive lineman, is rated the No. 10 prospect in Virginia by The Roanoke Times. He commutes daily from Appomattox to Lynchburg, where he is in his second season at Liberty Christian Academy.
"I like defense better," Massie said, "but, if there’s more of a need on offense, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll probably end up on the O-line."
Georgia was Massie’s second choice. He also had scholarship offers from Tennessee, Clemson, Maryland and North Carolina.
He is the 23rd player to commit to Tech for 2008 and the 18th from Virginia.
