BLACKSBURG -- All you message-board posters and talk-show callers who simply can't resist ripping into Virginia Tech quarterback Sean Glennon? Well, take this, Glennon says:
Approximately an hour after Tech's 17-7 win over East Carolina in last Saturday's season opener at Lane Stadium, Glennon was leaving the Hokies' locker room when his cellphone rang from a "restricted" caller.
"I thought it was a reporter because it was a 'restricted' number," Glennon recalled Monday. "So I almost didn't pick it up. I don't know what made me."
On the other end of the line was Tom Brady, the quarterback who has led the New England Patriots to three Super Bowl titles in the past six years.
"It was a very nice surprise," Glennon said. "It's not everyday someone like that gives you a phone call. He said he just wanted to tell me that he had watched the [ECU] game and that I did a good job of handling everything, and I had played well after obviously getting off to a rough start ... basically, to say congratulations."
Brady talked to Boston's WBZ-TV on Monday about the call.
"I think everybody looked at that situation at Virginia Tech ... the excitement of the fans and the school to be back on the field and representing Virginia Tech in a really positive way," Brady said. "I thought [Glennon] did a great job leading the team. He looks like a great, young quarterback."
After being intercepted on Tech's first play, Glennon finished 22-for-33 passing for 245 yards and a touchdown.
How does Brady know Glennon? Well, he didn't until Saturday. Both, however, have a mutual contact in Boston-area television sportscaster Steve Burton, whose family runs a football camp in the New England area that Glennon attended in high school.
"[Steve] kind of takes an active interest in my career, so I guess he's talked to Tom some about me," Glennon said.
So how nice was it to get a pat on the back from the best QB in the NFL?
"I think Tom Brady is a little more credible than a lot of the guys that have opinions on me, so it's nice to see," Glennon said. "It's nice to have someone with obviously a very high football IQ give me compliments."
Bring on Dorsey
Tech sophomore right guard Sergio Render said he hopes to see a lot of LSU All-America defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey when the Hokies and Tigers meet Saturday in Baton Rouge.
"I'm not going to back down," said the 6-foot-4, 310-pound Render, the Hokies' strongest lineman. "Both of us put on pants the same way. I feel like if I can get my hands on him, I can put him on the ground. ... Anybody can be pancaked. And I'm going to try my best to make sure that happens this Saturday."
A fast crowd
When asked if he could see LSU's team speed on the videotape, Tech coach Frank Beamer had a classic answer.
"Their blurs are more blurry than most blurs," said Beamer, triggering a roar of laughter from those at Tuesday's weekly media gathering. "I believe they may be the fastest team I've ever seen. ... Wooo! They can get it. They got the extra gear."
Tech tidbits
Beamer said he and his staff will decide Friday if freshman QB Tyrod Taylor will figure into Saturday's plans. Will he announce the decision publicly Friday? "Well, I probably won't," Beamer quipped. ... When asked if he would be surprised to see Taylor on the field after what he had seen in practice, OT Duane Brown said: "I wouldn't. He's definitely talented enough, I think. I don't know what the coaches' plans are for him, though." ... Redshirt senior CB Roland Minor is academically ineligible and won't play this season. "The good news is he can stay in school and do 13 hours and graduate," Beamer said.
