Virginia Tech freshman defensive back Brandon Flowers was arrested on Thursday and charged with a misdemeanor of carrying a concealed weapon.

The arrest stems from an argument that Virginia Tech police say took place in a campus parking lot on Thursday afternoon, when another Tech student claims a passenger in Flower's SUV threatened him with a gun.

The 20-year-old student, who asked not to be named because he feared retribution, was walking in a campus parking lot when police say a blue GMC Envoy with Florida license plates came close to hitting him and the student got into an argument with a passenger.

The driver of the Envoy made another lap around the parking lot and when the SUV again approached the student, a passenger leaned out the window with a handgun and pointed it at the student before driving away, Virginia Tech Police Department spokesman Wendell Flinchum said.

The student wrote down the license plate number and description of the Envoy and called Virginia Tech police, who located it soon after in a parking lot near Cassell Coliseum, Flinchum said.

The Envoy belongs to Flowers, Flinchum said. Police found a pellet gun in a seat pouch behind the seat when they searched the Envoy, he said.

Flowers is being touted as a backup at the Hokies' field corner spot this fall.

Virginia Tech police chief Debra Duncan said the state statute against carrying concealed weapons applies to pellet guns. The gun found in the car looked similar to the Glock handguns commonly used by police, she said.

The charge carries a maximum 12-month jail sentence and $2,500 fine. In addition, Flowers could face sanctions for violating university policy and could be expelled.

Police say they are still looking for the passenger, who they believe pointed the gun at the student.

Meanwhile, the Hokies received good news on Todd Nolen, an incoming wide receiver recruit from Hampton. Nolen was informed Wednesday by Hampton Commonwealth attorneys that he will not face felony charges of maiming and attempted robbery for his part in a fight March 9 in a restroom at Hampton High School.

If Nolen had been found guilty in the case, he would have been ineligible to join the Hokies this fall.
