The Virginia Tech men's basketball team finally had a great shooting performance.

The Hokies shot a season-high 55.1 percent from the field Saturday night in a 73-50 win over Charleston Southern at Cassell Coliseum.

It was the first time this season Tech shot at least 50 percent from the field. The Hokies (9-1) entered the game shooting just 41.8 percent on the season.

The Hokies scored 22 fast-break points. They also made a season-high eight 3-pointers.

Malcolm Delaney scored 26 points in 29 minutes. He was 9-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. His six 3-pointers tied his career high.

Dorenzo Hudson chipped in 14 points. He was 4-of-9 from the field.

"We got out on the break, and Malcolm shot the ball really well," Tech coach Seth Greenberg said Sunday. "Dorenzo shot the ball well.

"It was the best game Dorenzo's played since he's been here, He shot the ball in rhythm. He made some great plays in transition. He defended pretty hard."

Tech jumped to a 17-2 lead with 14:29 left in the first half. Delaney and Hudson each sank two 3-pointers in the run.

The Hokies led 27-8 with 7:23 left in the first half, and had a 33-21 halftime cushion.

"Our approach the first 13 minutes was outstanding," Greenberg said.

The Buccaneers (4-6) shot just 34 percent from the field. It was the third straight game and fifth time this season that Tech held its foe to below 40 percent.

"We've got a long way to go [defensively], but we've gotten a little bit better," Greenberg said. "We've got eons to go to be really where I want to be defensively."

J.T. Thompson added 11 points off the bench for the Hokies, who have yet to beat a team currently ranked in the top 70 of the Rating Percentage Index.
