Hokies hold off Delaware on the basketball court

Virginia Tech shoots just 35.4 percent from the floor, but improves to 4-1 on the season.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Virginia Tech men's basketball team will be playing on national television Tuesday.

You've been given fair warning.

The Hokies had another abysmal offensive outing Saturday and needed overtime to beat Colonial Athletic Association lightweight Delaware 74-66 at the Palestra in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.

"It's like getting a root canal every night," said Tech coach Seth Greenberg, whose team will visit Iowa on ESPN2 on Tuesday.

The Hokies (4-1) shot 35.4 percent from the field -- the third time this season they have shot worse than 38 percent from the field.

Are the Hokies worried about their offense?

"Yeah, we're worried a little," said Malcolm Delaney, who had 24 points.

Jeff Allen was just 5-of-14 from the field but finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. No other Hokie scored in double figures.

"We've got to be more productive," Greenberg said. "We'll get better. That's what November's for. That's what the beginning of December's for. Do we have to get better quick? Yeah, we do. But we have pieces.

"Someone besides Malcolm's got to make some shots. ... We're not playing as well as I would like. But there's a lot of teams that aren't playing as well as they'd like."

Delaney missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, leaving the score tied at 63 at the end of regulation.

But he made two free throws to start the scoring in overtime. After a turnover by William Fleming graduate Jamelle Hagins of Delaware (1-4), Delaney buried a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 68-63 with 4:06 to go. Tech led the rest of the way.

The Hokies have had trouble pulling away from foes from mid-major conferences in all four of their wins.

"We don't have to beat people by 20," Delaney said. "We're not a Top 25 team."

Jawan Carter (23 points) sank two free throws to give Delaware its only lead at 58-57 with 2:17 to go in regulation.

Freshman small forward Manny Atkins and Delaney answered with back-to-back jumpers to give Tech a 61-58 lead, but D.J. Boney banked in a 3-pointer to tie the score.

Allen scored to give Tech the lead with 46 seconds to go in regulation, but Carter made a layup to tie the score at 63 with 17.9 seconds left.

Atkins entered the game having played just one minute this season, but he had five points and two steals in 19 minutes off the bench.

"I've been on Coach [Greenberg], like 'Coach, when am I going to get a chance? If I get that chance, I promise you I'm going to do good,' " Atkins said. "He finally told me today, 'Be ready.' He called my name, and I stepped up to the challenge."

Greenberg said Tech, coming off a 61-50 loss to Temple on Friday, came together as a team Saturday.

"We had guys on our bench, that when Manny Atkins came in and contributed, they were 100 percent behind him," Greenberg said. "That was the challenge I gave to our team [after the loss Friday] night, that we needed to have a greater trust and support of each other."

Hagins, a freshman, had eight points and seven rebounds for Delaware. He has started every game.

"The [college] game's a whole lot more faster, a whole lot more physical," he said. "You're not the biggest guy on the court just because you're tall. You've got to use your mind a lot more."

Tech freshman Cadarian Raines, who has been sidelined with a fractured foot, could make his debut Tuesday.
