A.D. Vassallo is back home in Puerto Rico this week, playing in a pro league. But he could don a new uniform soon.
Vassallo, who made the All-ACC third team as a senior swingman at Virginia Tech this year, has a shot to be taken in the NBA Draft Thursday.
He was not among the 52 players invited to show their wares at the NBA pre-draft camp in Chicago last month.
But NBA assistant scouting director Ryan Blake said Vassallo could be picked in the second and final round.
"He has an NBA skill, and that's shooting," Blake said. "He has a lot of versatility and basketball IQ that may allow him to find a spot on an NBA roster.
"If he doesn't get drafted in the second round, ... he'll be asked by probably a few teams to be on their summer-league roster."
Vassallo, the fifth-leading scorer in Tech history with 1,822 points, was among the players who participated in a multi-team workout at Houston this month that featured officials from not only the Rockets but also from Portland, Miami, Boston, Memphis and Minnesota.
He has also visited Portland, Miami, Chicago and Denver for workouts. Blake said the concerns about Vassallo are whether he can defend NBA off-guards and get his shot off in the NBA.
The 6-foot-6 Vassallo averaged 19.1 points for the Hokies this year. His 267 career 3-pointers are a Tech record.
"I would not be surprised if he gets picked in the second round," said Vassallo's agent, Andrew Vye.
"If he does not get picked, for sure he'll have several invites to the summer league. A lot of people really like A.D."
Vassallo made the all-tournament team in April at the Portsmouth Invitational, the annual showcase for NBA scouts. He will conclude play in the Puerto Rico league this week.
