Washington finishes 6th in dunk contest 1st round
SAN ANTONIO -- Virginia Tech's Deron Washington pulled off many entertaining dunks in his Hokie career, but he couldn't get out of the first round Thursday in the 20th annual college slam dunk championship.
Each of the eight participants had to perform two different dunks in the first round as they tried to earn one of the four berths in the semifinals. Washington finished in sixth place with an average of 42 (out of 50 points) in the first round.
Washington got a total of 42 from the five judges on his first dunk. He impressed the crowd at St. Mary's University when he elevated, pounded the ball off the backboard then dunked. But Washington missed on his first attempt and needed a second attempt before making the dunk, which could have hurt his score.
Washington couldn't even make his second dunk, trying four times in the 30 seconds he was given.
Washington received no score on the second dunk because he didn't pull it off, so he was stuck with his 42.
