After 11 years, Hokies ranked
Upset wins against Duke and North Carolina earn Virginia Tech its first AP ranking since 1995-96.

You won't just find the Virginia Tech men's basketball team in Cassell Coliseum this week. Now you can find the Hokies in the Top 25 polls, too.
The Hokies' upset of then-No. 1 North Carolina catapulted them into the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in 11 years Monday. Tech (13-4, 3-0 ACC), which knocked off Duke and UNC on back-to-back Saturdays, cracked the poll at No. 23.
"These kids, they earned it," Hokies coach Seth Greenberg said. "We've gotten better. We've gotten pretty good senior leadership. We're getting back to being a little bit tougher. We're competitive as a group, and we're defending better. And we're taking care of the ball; that's the big thing. For us, we've got to take care of the ball."
It was quite a jump for Tech, which was only 12th among "others receiving votes" last week.
This is the first time Tech has made the AP Top 25 since 1995-96, when the Hokies were ranked as high as eighth before finishing 22nd in the final poll.
"It's great, but the poll we want to be in is the poll of 65," Greenberg said. "I just want to play in the NCAA tournament. That's the only poll people really pay attention to, anyway -- unfortunately. I think that's wrong."
Tech hopes to make the 65-team NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996.
The Hokies also made the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 coaches' poll Monday at No. 25. They didn't get a single vote in that poll last week.
Greenberg told his players about the rankings after practice Monday. The Hokies had hoped last Saturday's win over UNC would result in a spot in the polls.
"It's good to be ranked, but we don't want to be just in the 20s," guard Jamon Gordon said Saturday. "We want to get a little bit higher. We want to just keep winning."
Staying in the poll next week won't be easy. Tech will visit Florida State (12-5, 0-3) on Wednesday. The Seminoles, who beat Florida last month, have beaten the Hokies in Tallahassee the past two seasons. Tech will host Maryland (15-3, 1-2) on Sunday.
The Hokies go from underdog to target, but Greenberg doesn't plan to talk to his charges about how to play in their new role as the hunted.
"It's not about being the hunted," he said. "What is winning a byproduct of? Playing hard, playing together, practicing well. That's how you win games."
UNC dropped to No. 4 in the AP poll.
Tech is ranked 35th in the Rating Percentage Index, according to the Collegiate Basketball News. The RPI is a formula the NCAA tournament selection committee uses to judge teams based on their record, strength of schedule and opponents' strength of schedule.
