The Hokies get their 14th commitment for 2014 out of Deshler, Ohio.
Thursday, July 11, 2013
Virginia Tech added a 2014 football commitment Wednesday from Deshler, Ohio, offensive lineman Colt Pettit.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound recruit is the 14th commitment in the Hokies’ class and fourth offensive lineman, joining Eric Gallo of Holland, Pa., Tyrell Smith of Ramsey, N.J., and Billy Ray Mitchell of Paramus, N.J.
Both Rivals and 247 Sports rank Pettit as a three-star recruit. 247 Sports lists him as the No. 31 player in Ohio, while Rivals ranks him 59th.
He’s the latest in a trend of recruits for new line coach Jeff Grimes, who targets lean, athletic players and has gone out of state to get them.
“I pull on most plays in high school,” Pettit said. “Coach Grimes loves that about me. My coach says I’m very explosive off the line, so I’d say that’s one of my stronger aspects.”
Pettit, who is a guard in high school but said he might end up anywhere on the line in college, said he had 17 offers. Virginia Tech and Indiana were his finalists.
He’s the first Hokies commitment from Ohio since 2006, when Tech signed offensive linemen Aaron Brown and Clark Crum.
