Both of Joe Harris' 3-point field goals Saturday came after he had broken his left hand in the first half at North Carolina.

Now that X-rays have confirmed the fracture, will the Cavaliers be as willing to use him?

A couple extra days might have helped, but 22nd-ranked Virginia (19-5, 6-4) will be involved in the ACC's first midweek game this week when it visits Clemson (12-12, 4-6) tonight at 7.

Harris, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, has played in all 55 UVa games during his career, but that streak is in jeopardy.

"It will be a game-time decision," Virginia coach Tony Bennett said Monday on the ACC coaches' teleconference. "There's obviously some swelling. We're waiting for that to go down.

"It's not an ideal situation. If there's two positives, it's first and foremost, you know how tough he is. ... And, it's on his nonshooting hand."

Harris, second on the team in scoring and rebounding, was 5-of-6 on 3-pointers and finished with 19 points Jan. 31 as the Cavaliers defeated Clemson 65-61 in Charlottesvillle.

Even with Harris, the Cavaliers have only eight able-bodied scholarship players, having lost 7-foot center Assane Sene to ankle surgery Jan. 20.

Freshman Malcolm Brogdon has played 22 minutes or more in each of Virginia's last seven games and likely will start if Harris can't play, but the only other scholarship reserves are his classmates, Darion Atkins and Paul Jesperson, who have played sparingly.

Jesperson had been targeted for a redshirt year until James Johnson and KT Harrell announced before Christmas that they were leaving the program.

Jesperson hit two 3-pointers Jan. 19 at Georgia Tech but hasn't scored in seven subsequent games. He has gone 0-for-8 on 3-pointers during that span and is 3-for-19 from beyond the arc for the season.

"Rotations are usually shrinking at this time of year for most teams," Bennett said. "[UVa's] can't shrink much more because we have got it as small as we can."

Bennett said he anticipated that Harris would be fitted for a pad to wear on the hand that would have a hard shell on the outside.

"I think there would be finger movement and wrist flexion," Bennett said. "I'm sure it will be a little cumbersome, but it's also got to allow for protection."
