Baron is a 2009 graduate of Bishop Hendricken in Warwick, R.I., where he twice was named all-state and played on three state-championship teams. He made an oral commitment to URI in November, but the Rams never announced his signing.
Baron’s older brother, Jimmy, played for their father from 2005-2009.
Rutgers and Seton Hall had offered scholarships to Baron, who attracted Virginia’s attention when he averaged 29 points for Worcester this winter. UVa plans to watch Baron during the fall were aborted because he had a broken wrist.
“He’s a power guard who shoots it better than a lot of people give him credit for,” Worcester coach Ed Reilly told The Providence Journal, “and he’s able to get to where he wants to go on the court.”
Virginia signed five players during the fall and has eight scholarship underclassmen. The addition of Baron would put the Cavaliers over the Division I men’s basketball scholarship limit of 13, barring other arrangements.
