ST. GEORGE, Va. — Former Virginia player Laurynas Mikalauskas announced Thursday that he has signed with an agent and plans to pursue pro opportunities overseas.

UVa coach Dave Leitao had said last week that Mikalauskas would not be returning to UVa for his senior season because “there are standards to be a member of this basketball program and Laurynas has not lived up to those standards.”

Mikalauskas explained at a news conference Thursday that his dismissal was for academic reasons.

“I had completed the rehab on my shoulder, and had every intention to be part of the team this coming season. Unfortunately, Coach Leitao informed me … that my scholarship was no longer available to me due to academic eligibility [reasons],” he said at the Blue Ridge School, where he played high school basketball.

“I could not see myself transferring to another school, or playing for another college basketball team. Therefore, I have decided to forego my last year of NCAA eligibility and pursue my dream of playing basketball at the professional level.”
