GREENSBORO, N.C. — The late-season slide of the Virginia women’s basketball team carried over into the ACC tournament.
Eleventh-seeded Boston College beat sixth-seeded UVa 66-57 in the first round Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Cavaliers (16-14) lost for the sixth time in seven games. Two of those losses were to BC (14-16).
UVa lost in the first round for the second time in three years.
“I’m disappointed for our seniors to go out on this note,” UVa second-year coach Joanne Boyle said.
It was the first time a No. 11seed or a No. 12 seed won in this tournament since 2009.
UVa had dropped five in a row, including a 61-49 loss at BC on Feb. 14, before upsetting nationally ranked Florida State last weekend.
The Cavaliers scored 72 points against FSU but shot just 39.6 percent from the field Thursday.
BC had four players score in double figures, twice as many as UVa.
BC scored 23 points off UVa’s 18 turnovers.
“That really hurt us,” Boyle said.
BC also did better from long range, making nine 3-pointers to UVa’s three.
The Eagles led 32-22 at halftime.
“They played 40 minutes,” Boyle said. “We came out and we were shell-shocked on defense, and we let the defensive end of the floor affect our offense. We kind of didn’t find a rhythm until the second half.”
Down 37-24 with 17:25 left, the Cavaliers went on an 18-3 run to grab their first lead of the second half at 42-40 with 10:37 to go. Ataira Franklin had 10 points in the run, including a 3-pointer to give UVa that 42-40 lead. China Crosby added six points in the run.
Franklin finished with a game-high 17 points.
With her team trailing 45-44, BC’s Kerri Shields made a jumper and a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 49-45 lead with 6:43 left. BC led the rest of the way.
“Her confidence as a senior, just to go out there and be ready to take the big shot when things weren’t going well, that’s not coaching, that’s players being ready to make plays,” BC coach Erik Johnson said.
Shields scored a team-high 16 points. She was 4 of 8 from 3-point range.
UVa’s Telia McCall scored to cut the lead to 54-51 with 4:12 to go, but Shields answered with another 3-pointer.
Sarah Imovbioh scored to cut the deficit to 57-54, but BC’s Kristen Doherty (15 points) answered with a basket.
Franklin made a basket and free throw to cut the lead to 59-57 with 1:27 remaining. But UVa did not score again.
BC’s Tessah Holt stole the ball from Franklin and made a layup to extend the lead to 61-57 with 56.5 seconds to go.
Virginia’s Kelsey Wolfe (10.6 ppg) missed her fifth straight game with a torn ACL.
Faith Randolph had 15 points for UVa.
