CHARLOTTESVILLE - Mark Bernardino retired on Monday after spending 35 years as the head coach of Virginia's swimming and diving programs.

The retirement is effective immediately, according to UVa officials. Bernardino has been associated with Virginia either as a student, assistant coach or head coach, for 41 years.

The Cavaliers won 27 ACC swimming championships during Bermardino's tenure. UVa has won both the men's and women's conference titles in the past six seasons.
