Virginia announced the resignation of Eileen Schmidt, who was the coach at her alma mater for six seasons.

Schmidt was 145-168, including 38-81 in ACC play. UVa won only one ACC tournament game in her reign but made the NCAA tournament in 2010. UVa was 21-28, 4-17 this season.

Schmidt, who played for UVa from 1991-94, was previously the coach at Northwestern State and Kentucky.

"I have decided to retire from coaching," Schmidt said in a statement. "I am happy that I was able to lead my alma mater to its first and only appearance in the NCAA tournament ... but the job is not complete. The program, alumni and especially [the] current team deserve new leadership and energy to finish the job."
