Veteran Busch driver says series needs repairing

Add Stacy Compton to the growing list of those who believe the Busch Series needs an overhaul.

The series has brought only two full-time Busch drivers to Victory Lane this season. But Compton, a Grit native and five-year Busch regular, said the series won't likely see a decline in Cup infiltration unless ticket sales for NASCAR's premier division begin to suffer.

"I think when people start realizing they can buy a Saturday ticket for half price and see the same guys that are racing on Sunday and they stop buying Sunday tickets, then NASCAR will make a change," Compton said Tuesday during a promotional stop in Roanoke. "But until then, I don't think you're going to see any changes."

Compton advocates placing a limit on the number of Cup drivers who can qualify for a Busch race on a given weekend. So far this season, six Cup drivers have participated in every Busch event. Cup drivers also hold the top six positions in the points standings.

"It's tough on the owners, bringing new guys into the sport trying to make shows," Compton said. "It's tough on new start-up Busch teams trying to get in the sport because they're not going to make shows."

The highest finishing Busch-only driver at Chicago last weekend was Johnny Sauter, who finished 17th.

The domination by Cup drivers has recently raised the ire of solo Busch teams more than ever as Cup drivers have jetted back and forth from Cup to Busch sites on the same weekend.

Kevin Harvick, who leads the Busch standings by 323 points, is a virtual lock for the series title. Paul Menard, the highest non-full-time Cup driver in the standings, is seventh, 709 points out of the lead.

"I wish we as a Busch Series could do a Chase with just Busch drivers and have a true Nextel Cup champion, a true Busch champion and a true truck champion," Compton said. "Right now, I don't think you're going to see that."

Compton still feels like he's in a better position to run competitively than some of his single-car team competitors in the series.

When ST Motorsports merged with Wood Brothers Racing in 2005, Compton was no longer part of a one-car operation with less than 30 employees.

Wood Brothers/JTG Racing boasts about 200 employees between its two Craftsman Truck, two Busch and Nextel Cup teams, Compton said.

"I think the biggest thing is on any given day the Cup crew chief will come over and talk to the two Busch crew chiefs," Compton said. "Now we've got two Busch crew chiefs that are learning, you've got a Cup team that's learning, you've got two truck teams that are learning, so I think you can pool a lot more resources on Monday morning and figure out what worked and what didn't."

Compton, who is 19th in the Busch standings, should be well-prepared when the Busch Series returns to Martinsville Speedway on July 22 for the first time since 1994.

Compton, who drove in the Cup series full time in 2000 and 2001, relishes the chance to return to the track where he made his debut in NASCAR's top circuit in 1996. Considering his results that weekend -- he qualified ninth and stayed on the lead lap for more than 200 circuits -- there's little wonder why Compton anticipates a return to the track located only about 45 minutes from his hometown.

Compton credits his performance that weekend for landing a Craftsman Truck Series ride the next year.

"We were sitting there with a little fifth-wheel hauler in the midst of all these tractor-trailers and in the midst of Earnhardts and Gordons and Pettys and people like that, people that I'd looked up to my whole life, and all of a sudden we're out there racing with them," Compton said about his first Cup start. "Martinsville is truly my home track."
