Weekly Racing challenge

RIDGEWAY -- For almost every one of 200 laps, most people at Martinsville Speedway figured Dennis Setzer was on his way to a second straight Bailey's 300 victory.

Then it didn't happen.

After an hour rain-delay extended the race into twilight, a late-race collision ultimately decided the finish at the track with no lights.

On lap 193 Philip Morris and Setzer got into each other on the front stretch and Jason York popped out of the scrap with a green-white checker victory after the restart.

"There was a hole there so I stepped in the hole and took advantage of it," said York, who said he hasn't had much luck during this event recently.

"It hasn't hit me yet," he said. "Today we had luck ... that's what it takes to win at Martinsville."

Setzer, last year's winner, would hold on for second place while Matt McCall finished in third.

"That's just hard racing at Martinsville," said Setzer of the contact with Morris. "We were both racing hard."

Morris had run in first or second place along with Setzer for most of the race but wouldn't finish near there after the wreck.

McCall's third-place finish was his best at the track in his career and said Setzer and Morris were pretty hard to beat.

"They definitely had real good cars," he said. "Class of the field for sure."

Kelly Kingery placed fourth to finish highest of all the Motor Mile drivers, employing patience and weathering the carnage around him.

Butch Hamlet made his way to a fifth-place finish after beginning in 40th.

As for the rest of the Motor Mile drivers, they held their own for most of the race.

At one point, there were four of them in the top 10 with Tommy Lemons Jr., Morris, Kingery and Forrest Reynolds all staking a claim.

Davin Scites and Reynolds both started out very strong but both had car problems that ended their nights early.

Chad Harris had troubles coming out of the gate and barely raced at all.

Not that this was odd.

Roughly half the 42-car field was taken out during the race.

But that was only part of the Bailey's 300. The other was the heat races and qualifying where the Radford track's representatives were very impressive.

Nine of the track's familiar faces made the 42-car field from the 18 that made the trip to Martinsville.

Scites broke the track qualifying record for the second straight year with a time of 20.316 seconds and earned the pole while familiar opponent Morris qualified on the outside pole.

Lemons qualified in fifth place, Kingery in 13th, Harris in 17th and Jerame Donley in 19th to all solidify a spot in the field.

Reynolds qualified 23rd, one spot out, and had to place in the top five in the first 25-lap heat to make the field.

He ended the race in second to earn a spot.

Craig Oliver earned his spot in the third heat race with a fourth-place finish.

As unlikely a qualifier as just about anyone was Jamie Byrd of Dublin.

Byrd started 19th in the final heat race but avoided the numerous wrecks and held off a late challenge to finish fifth and earn the last spot in the feature.
