DAYTONA BEACH,Fla.-- Randy Moss' entrance into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will gain attention, but he isn't the only black who will own a team next year.
Brad Daugherty, a former NBA and North Carolina player, will partner with Tad and Jodi Geschickter to run a truck team full time next season.
It's a return to the series for Daugherty, who also works as an ESPN broadcaster for NASCAR events.
Daugherty owned Liberty Racing from the mid-1990s to about 2000. His team won three truck races, including two with the late Kenny Irwin. Even as a broadcaster, Daugherty missed being an owner.
"I always wanted to go back to the truck series," Daugherty said recently.
Daugherty is a longtime racing fan. He wore No. 43 to honor Richard Petty, his favorite driver.
"I grew up being around hot rods and racing," Daugherty said. "I just happened to also be pretty good athlete and ended up playing pro basketball, but racing is my passion."
He makes his return to the sport as the economy challenges teams with higher costs and fewer sponsorship opportunities. Earlier this week, car owner Chip Ganassi shut down the Sprint Cup team of Dario Franchitti because of lack of sponsorship.
"There's no doubt about it, we're coming into it in terrible times," Daugherty said. "I don't worry as much about next week as I do today. You do what's right today and it will take care of tomorrow.
"If I put this thing off another year, I might not have an opportunity to do it the way I want to do it."
