DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Clay Campbell, president of Martinsville Speedway, said officials plan to upgrade the track's pit road this summer.
That would mean putting a concrete surface on pit road -- it is asphalt now -- new inner walls and maybe some other things.
Campbell said that pit road likely won't be any wider because of the limited space in the infield.
Campbell was at Daytona International Speedway this week partly for his role as a track operator and partly as a team owner.
He's among the owners of the team that fields trucks for Stacy Compton and Dennis Setzer. Compton finished sixth in Friday's truck race with Setzer 10th. It was Campbell's first race as an owner.
"I've never watched a race with the intensity that I watched that one or with the interest that I watched," Campbell said. "It was pretty nerve-racking. I'm glad it's over."
Campbell also said that he'll continue racing. He plans to drive a Late Model at South Boston Speedway and Motor Mile Speedway in select races.
Out of a ride
Bill Davis Racing announced that Jacques Villeneuve is out of the No. 27 car for the next several races. Villeneuve failed to qualify for today's Daytona 500 and has failed to find sponsorship.
The team will use Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson. Skinner will drive the car next week at California. The team is still working with Villeneuve as he attempts to secure sponsorship for a fulltime ride.
Earnhardt movie
Published reports state that a movie on Dale Earnhardt's life will be made. An official from Dale Earnhardt Inc. said that's not a done deal.
"We are excited Red Wagon has committed themselves to developing such a project," said Max Siegel, president of global operations for DEI, in a statement. "Contrary to published reports, we have not granted any rights to Dale Sr.'s life and are in the very preliminary stages of putting a project like this together."
One last year
Bill Elliott told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that this will be his final season in Cup. "I've thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's time to move and let this other generation have it," Elliott said after he failed to qualify for the 500 for the Wood Brothers. "I just feel like it's good to let everyone know what my thinking is. It's time to go do something different."
France speaks
NASCAR Chairman Brian France said on ESPN's pre-race show Saturday that he's "not sure" about if the Car of Tomorrow will be adopted in the Nationwide in 2009.
He also seemed to endorse NASCAR's idea of a minimum age for Cup, which would likely keep young drivers in the Nationwide Series longer.
"The longer you stay in the Nationwide Series the more prepared you are," he said. ""Dale Jr. stayed in there an additional year after winning the championship. Why? Great competition and better prepared when got to the Sprint Cup."
Pit stops
Carl Edwards was the fastest in the final Cup practice session with a lap of 191.034 mph. He was followed by John Andretti (190.937 mph), Kyle Petty (190.634), Robby Gordon (190.375) and Greg Biffle (190.323). ... Scott Riggs slapped the wall in practice. That also forced Clint Bowyer into the wall. Both teams made repairs and returned to practice.
