Dustin Long's blogNASCAR multimediaFONTANA, Calif. -- Hall of Fame Racing has become the latest NASCAR Nextel Cup team to add new owners as the sport's surge for more money continues. Two executives with the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team will be the principle owners of Hall of Fame Racing, which fields cars for Tony Raines and is aligned with Joe Gibbs Racing. NFL stars Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, who had been the team's owners, will remain as minority owners. Buying into the team is Diamondbacks chief executive officer Jeff Moorad and chief operating officer Tom Garfinkel. The Arizona Republic reported that Panda Express CEO Tom Davin also is joining as an owner of the team. Since the beginning of this season, four teams have announced mergers or that they are adding partners. Roush Racing joined with the Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox. George Gillett, who owns the NHL's Montreal Canadiens recently became the new majority owner of the team Ray Evernham started. Robert Yates merged his team with the Champ Car team of Newman/Haas/Lanigan, making the announcement last month at Indianapolis. Also, Dale Earnhardt Inc., and Ginn Racing merged in July. What makes the Hall of Fame Racing ownership change unique is that this is the first one involving a one-car team. It shows that some find worth in even the sport's smallest teams. That could be a good sign for the smaller teams that struggle to find enough money to compete with the sport's largest teams every week. Talks are ongoing and other Cup teams could be making announcements on ownership changes later this season. Moorad said Sunday at California Speedway that he talked with other Cup teams but could not name them because of confidentiality agreements. Hall of Fame Racing, which is in its second season of Cup, is expected to join Joe Gibbs Racing in the move to Toyota next season. Kyle Busch, who will drive for JGR next season, said this weekend that the team will switch to Toyota. Joe Gibbs Racing will make that announcement this week. Hall of Fame Racing gets its chassis and engines from JGR. "We really can't comment on which direction we'll go next year at this point,'' said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing, "but I would say this, that whichever direction that we go, Hall of Fame will be a part of.'' Garfinkel, who had the executive vice president at Chip Ganassi Racing before joining the Diamondbacks, said no decisions have been made on Raines' status. Driver to be examined Brad Keselowski, who drives for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Busch series team, was examined and released from Loma Linda University Medical Center on Saturday night after a crash at California Speedway. Keselowski's car was struck on the right rear quarterpanel in a multi-car crash, went up the turn 1 banking and slammed the wall with the left front. He was helped out of the car and placed on a stretcher, favoring his left leg. A release from the team stated that Keselowski underwent CT scanning and X-rays on his left ankle and chest. Those proved negative. Keselowski is to be further evaluated by Dr. Jerry Petty in Charlotte this week. Jeff Burton passed Kyle Busch late to win the night race. Deals near Car owner J.D. Gibbs says that contract extensions are nearly set with Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart. Both have contracts through 2009. Both are set to attend the team's press conference later this week announcing the move to Toyota and their contact extensions could be announced there. |
