Weekly Racing challenge
BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Jeff Gordon is fired up, and that's not a good thing for the competition.
Days after losing the Watkins Glen race because he spun out in the lead, Gordon won the pole for this weekend's 3M Perforance 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Gordon claimed his sixth pole of the season with a lap of 189.026 mph.
Greg Biffle (188.684) will start second. Kasey Kahne, Bobby Labonte and Elliott Sadler complete the top five.
Gordon admits he has extra motivation after last week's spin.
"I take a lot of pride in what I do out there and I want to do it the best I possibly can every single time I'm out there," he said. "I don't like to make mistakes. When I make a mistake, I take it personally to heart. When the team puts me in position to win, we need to win.
"My way of making it up to them is to come to the track prepared with ... the focus it takes not to make mistakes."
Staying put
Although there have been rumors that Dale Jarrett will retire at the end of the season, he said he plans to race next year.
"We are committed through next year," Jarrett said.
"I don't know where all this stuff got started. I knew this was going to be a process, a process to help this race team and Toyota to make it a seat that someone wants to get into."
Future plans
Labonte's contract with Petty Enterprises goes through 2008, but as the team tries to sign him to an extension, the former champion's name has come up as a candidate for other rides.
"It's about performance and we all want to run good," Labonte said. "You want to do it, and you want to do it where you're at. Obviously, that would be the thing you would want to do. Running good fixes a lot of stuff."
Labonte is 20th in the points standings but has not had a finish better than 18th in his past 10 races.
Back to work
Crew chiefs Steve Letarte (Jeff Gordon) and Chad Knaus (Jimmie Johnson) were back in the garage, their six-race suspensions having expired after last weekend's race at Watkins Glen.
"We have the band back together," Johnson said.

Although a court ruled NASCAR can make AT&T take its logos off Jeff Burton's car, the company has until Monday to challenge the court's decision. That means Burton's car should carry the logos this weekend.
