Weekly Racing challenge

AVONDALE, Ariz. - Rusty Wallace says he and Penske teammate Ryan Newman have "a long way to go" to repair their working relationship.

Their frustrations became public at Martinsville when Newman bumped Wallace as they raced in the top five in the final laps. The contact allowed several cars to pass Wallace, who finished 10th. Wallace retaliated by bumping Newman's car after the race. NASCAR fined Wallace $10,000. "We definitely have got a lot of work to do to get all the teams working together," Wallace said. "He's seeing red, and I'm seeing blue. We're not seeing eye-to-eye at all on what's going on right now. But right now there's not enough time to concentrate on it. I'm doing my deal; he's doing his deal. And next year we're going to try to get all the cars working together."

Said Newman: "We haven't taken the time to discuss [things], and we're going to ride things out and see what happens. I've always said this is one of the toughest, if not the toughest team sport there is. Your teammates are also your competitors versus football or basketball where your teammates are someone who can assist you in scoring points."

That Wallace is having problems with a teammate is not surprising. Wallace didn't always side with Jeremy Mayfield when Mayfield was his teammate from 1998-2001. Wallace admits now that what Mayfield was doing seemed odd with setups, but it was the direction teams were moving toward.

Wallace and Mayfield have since reconciled. Friday, Wallace announced that Mayfield would drive 17 races for him in the Busch Series next season in a second car Wallace owns. Wallace also announced that Jamie McMurray would drive in 17 other races for that team. Wallace says he plans to race in the Busch event in Mexico City since it comes on an open weekend for the Cup series.

Familiar refrain

Ryan Newman won his fourth consecutive pole Friday with a track-record lap that amazed his competitors.

Newman's lap (135.854) was almost four-tenths of a second faster than runner-up Brian Vickers. Four tenths of a second separated Vickers from and Jeremy Mayfield, who starts 24th.

Newman's lap also beat Rusty Wallace's former track record of 134.178 mph, set four years ago.

Newman will attempt to tie a NASCAR record of five consecutive poles next weekend at Darlington. Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison each won five poles in a row.

After Newman and Vickers in the lineup is Joe Nemechek, rookie Kasey Kahne and Kevin Harvick.

Other title contenders joining Newman in the top 10 are Tony Stewart (sixth), Jeff Gordon (eighth) and Elliott Sadler (ninth). Points leader Kurt Busch starts 28th with Jimmie Johnson, who is second in the points, qualifying 13th.New deal

Terry Labonte and Gene Haas have formed a partnership to field Chevrolets for Justin Labonte next season in the Busch Series. The Coast Guard announced earlier this year that it would sponsor Justin Labonte, Terry Labonte's son, in all 35 races next season after sponsoring him in about half the races.

Haas receives chassis, motor and technical support from Hendrick Motorsports for its Nextel Cup and Busch series programs.

Justin Labonte will make his debut with the team next week at Darlington.

Pit stops

Stuart's Jon Wood will move to the Busch Series and drive a Ford next season. Although, Motor Racing Network announced a deal is set, Wood has yet to sign a contract. It is expected to take place soon. ... Ryan Newman's pole was the 17th this season for Dodge. Chevrolet has 12 poles and Ford two.
