Weekly Racing challenge

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Elliott Sadler questions why NASCAR didn't end last week's Nextel Cup race at Talladega under caution for a crash between Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne.

With no caution, the field raced to the finish and Sadler flipped near the finish line. Had the yellow waved, the field would have been frozen and no one would have raced to the finish. Biffle and Kahne crashed on the last lap a week ago near turn 2. Both were uninjured.

"I'm really upset that the yellow didn't come out the more I think about it," Sadler said. "They tell us in the driver's meeting ...

"'When a wreck happens and the caution is coming out, please slow down so we can expedite the safety equipment to the drivers as soon as possible,' and I just think that we need to pick a way to do this when a wreck happens.

"Throw the caution so we can see our fellow drivers getting help as soon as they can or, if it's the last lap and they're not going to throw the caution, we need to know that. We need to pick a scenario so the drivers will not be confused on what to do on the last lap."

Sadler admits the spring Talladega finish could have influenced NASCAR officials. During that race, series officials allowed the race to end under caution, angering fans who littered the track with debris.

A NASCAR official said a caution was not thrown because the pack was by the accident and because of the size of the track. Drivers had plenty of time to slow after crossing the finish line before getting back to the crash scene on the 2.66-mile speedway.

Repeat performance

Joe Nemechek won the pole for the second consecutive race. Nemechek won his eighth career pole with a lap of 180.156 mph.

Among the title contenders: Ryan Newman starts seventh with Dale Earnhardt Jr. eighth, Elliott Sadler 11th, Matt Kenseth 15th, Mark Martin 18th, points leader Kurt Busch 22nd, Tony Stewart 24th and Jeff Gordon 30th.

RCR moves

Richard Childress Racing announced that Clint Bowyer will replace Ron Hornaday next season in the team's Busch car sponsored by AC Delco. Bowyer has three top-five finishes in 11 starts this season, sharing driving duties with Kevin Harvick.

Martinsville testing

Championship contenders Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth are scheduled to test at Martinsville on Tuesday. Also expected to test that day are Joe Nemechek, rookie Scott Riggs, Michael Waltrip, Ward Burton and Ken Schrader. Nemechek and Riggs are scheduled to test there Wednesday.

Legal woes

Jason Leffler was granted a temporary injunction Thursday in Kansas City to drive the Haas-CNC Racing Busch car this weekend after the team announced it would replace him with Blake Feese. Friday, a judge tossed out the injunction, allowing Feese to qualify the car. Feese will start seventh in today's race. Rookie Paul Menard starts first.
