Heat slows Sellers, Cooley
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Redskins got lucky Monday. With temperatures in the upper 90s, the team got through the first practice of the season with only two players suffering heat-related problems.
Tight end Mike Sellers was carted from the field and hooked up to an IV about midway through practice. Later, tight end Chris Cooley went down, though he returned to the field before practice ended.
The only other apparent injury was to receiver Antwaan Randle El, who suffered a minor back injury when he jammed his leg on a pass pattern. He was held out the rest of practice.
The forecast the next two days is for a continuation of the extreme heat. Trainer Bubba Tyer said he will meet with coach Joe Gibbs after each practice to discuss strategy for keeping the players as comfortable as possible.
And baby makes three
Jon Jansen's thumbs have healed enough for him to change six-month-old baby Lucy's diapers regularly, the right tackle joked Monday.
"I've been doing them all the time," Jansen said, displaying typical papa's pride at his first born.
"It's been terrific. She's such a beautiful girl, just a lot of fun to have around."
From a football standpoint, Jansen's right thumb is close to 100 percent, but not there yet.
Jansen, who broke both thumbs last season, had additional surgery on the right one three months ago when tests showed deterioration in the joint. In practice, he'll wear a protective device as a preventative measure.
Recruiting
The Redskins announced that they have signed linebacker Philippe Gardent, who is part of the NFL's International Development Practice Squad program. Gardent, who was born in Colombes, France, and played for the Cologne Centurions, was the first international player in NFL Europe to be most valuable player.
He will spend the season on the practice squad but cannot be promoted to the active roster.
