Tech's Clowney and Frye go in the fifth round
The second day of the draft was fruitful for two Hokies and two Cavs
Virginia Tech's second-day contributions to the 2007 NFL draft came in rapid-fire time in Sunday's fifth round.
Approximately 15 minutes after the Green Bay Packers selected wide receiver David Clowney, the Houston Texans chose offensive tackle Brandon Frye. Clowney was the 157th overall pick in the draft, with Frye close behind at No. 163.
Clowney was relieved to hear from the Packers, who took Tech safety Aaron Rouse with the 89th overall pick in Saturday night's third round.
"[Saturday] night was very frustrating for me, waiting and watching all these other receivers go, a lot of guys I've never heard of before," said Clowney, a 6-foot, 188-pound speedster. "I was a little upset watching the fourth round, getting even more jittery."
Clowney, who had harbored strong hopes of going in the third round, said he will accept it and move on.
"I'm blessed to be in the situation I'm in," he said. "I can go to Green Bay, with a Hall of Fame quarterback [Brett Favre], and show what I can do."
The 6-4, 302-pound Frye was simply glad to be drafted considering he wasn't a regular starter at Tech until last season. He said he was surprised it was the Texans who called.
"It wasn't one of those places I had talked to a lot or had worked me out or showed much interest in me," Frye said. "I guess they had seen some film on me and liked what they saw."
Defensive end Noland Burchette signed a free-agent contract with Atlanta. Fullback Jesse Allen signed with the New York Jets and place-kicker Brandon Pace signed with the Denver Broncos.
