FRONT ROYAL — Cody Buchanan is a man of few words.
The lanky, left-handed Parry McCluer senior let his golf clubs do the talking Tuesday.
Buchanan won the VHSL Group 1A championship in stellar fashion as he birdied the final two holes at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club for a two-day total of 6-over-par 148 and a one-stroke victory over Josiah Singleton of William Campbell.
While Parry McCluer fell 13 strokes short of catching champion Holston in the team standings, the boys from Buena Vista had their blues muted when Buchanan became the first golfer in school history to win the individual title.
“It feels special, but I wish we would have won it as a team,” Buchanan said.
While Buchanan and Singleton went head-to-head in the same foursome, reports that first-round leader Larkin Gross was struggling on the back nine proved to be accurate.
Gross, who led Buchanan and Singleton by one stroke after a first-round 73, shot an 82 Tuesday and finished fourth at 155.
That left a two-man race, and Buchanan was certain where he stood heading to the finish line.
“Not really,” he said. “I knew it was going to be close, but I didn’t know how close it was.”
Buchanan settled matters with a three-foot birdie on the par-3 17th and a slick 18-foot downhill slider on No. 18 that proved to be the winning putt.
“Cody’s been real solid all year long,” Parry McCluer coach Nelson Fox said. “He played really well in the regional and the conference. Cody is very deserving. He has a very good short game. He gets up and down with the best of them.”
Holston’s 658 total was good for the Washington County school’s first state title in any team sport. Parry McCluer finished at 671, ahead of William Campbell (697) and Galax (714).
Peyton Garrett placed third individually for Holston at 154, while teammates Conrad Thacker was fifth at 156. Parry McCluer senior Christian Camden finished eighth at 166.
“My hat’s off to Holston,” Fox said. “That was a great win for them. But I think we accomplished a lot this year. We peaked at the right time, just a little bit short today.
”We had a runner-up finish in 1980. We won the state in ’81. This is the first time we’ve been back in years.”
Fox said the construction of Vista Links Golf Club in Buena Vista a decade ago has been a boon to his program.
“The kids are able to almost live on the golf course,” the Parry McCluer coach said. “That’s made a big difference for us. I remember the first clinic for Cody over at Vista Links was when he was in kindergarten.
“It’s just a great accomplishment for him.”
