It was a high-pressure situation in overtime just before a field goal put the Raiders over the top.

Penn Draper, who later kicked the winning field goal, hauls in a touchdown pass for North Cross late in the second quarter.

Penn Draper is not used to kicking field goals, but he did pretty well for himself Saturday.
Draper, who had never made a field goal prior to Saturday’s game, kicked a 22-yarder in the first overtime period to give the North Cross football team a 47-44 win over visiting Atlantic Shores Christian.
A jubilant Draper pulled off his helmet and sprinted down the field after making his game-ending kick before being mobbed by his teammates.
“It’s so unreal,” Draper said. “It’s the most nerve- racking thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
The senior made the first two field goals of his career Saturday. His only other attempt this year had been blocked; he did not attempt any last season.
Draper’s game-ending field goal was not the only time he succeeded under pressure.
His extra-point kick tied the score at 44 with 2:29 left in regulation. Thanks to a 5-yard penalty, that kick was not routine.
“I was extremely nervous,” Draper said of the extra-point kick.
Draper had a 46-yard TD catch earlier in the game.
North Cross (5-2) bounced back from a 22-20 loss at
St. Anne’s-Belfield last week.
“Last week was a horrible loss,” said North Cross running back Isaiah Harris, whose 10-yard TD catch preceded Draper’s tying extra-point kick. “We really needed this one.”
“We knew we were playing for maybe our postseason lives, … so that was a very important win for us,” Raiders coach Stephen Alexander said.
North Cross, playing its homecoming game, beat the Seahawks (6-2) for the fifth straight year.
“To come out here on our homecoming and beat them is just the greatest feeling,” North Cross safety Andrew Proctor said.
Max Revercomb completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards and two TDs for North Cross.
Harris ran for 108 yards and one TD. Ryan Dent ran for 82 yards and three TDs for the Raiders.
Brehon Britt ran for 276 yards and three TDs for the Seahawks, with Ryan Chamberlain completing 16 of 17 passes for 194 yards and two TDs with one interception.
With the Raiders clinging to a 37-36 lead, Alexander decided to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the ASC 45. But Dent was stopped for no gain with 5:47 to go, and the Seahawks capitalized.
Six plays later, Chamberlain scored on a 6-yard run and Britt ran for the 2-point conversion to give the visitors a 44-37 lead with 4:22 left.
“We had trouble stopping them, and I thought, ‘Let’s keep the ball and end the game,’ ” Alexander said of his fourth-down decision.
Fortunately for Alexander, North Cross responded. Capping a drive that included a 46-yard run by Harris, Revercomb threw a 10-yard TD pass to Harris. Draper’s extra-point kick tied the score.
The Seahawks were forced to punt on their final series of regulation.
In overtime, each team gets the ball first-and-goal from the enemy 10-yard line.
The Seahawks got the ball first, but Britt was stopped for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 5. That set the stage for Draper’s winning field goal.
“When it mattered, we came up with some big stops,” Alexander said.
North Cross forced four fumbles in regulation, with Proctor recovering two of them.
Not a bad day for Proctor, especially considering he had to leave the game twice because of cramps.
“I didn’t hydrate as well as I should’ve,” he said. “Coaches are always telling us to drink Pedialyte, drink Gatorade … and I didn’t prepare as well as I should have. I definitely will next game.”
