Trevor Mike made a pair of big plays on both sides of the ball Friday night as Patrick Henry outlasted Franklin County 34-25.
"We made a lot of plays tonight and found a way to win," Patrick Henry coach Alan Fiddler said.
The Patriots (4-2) raced out to a 21-6 lead after a strong second quarter, but watched that lead dwindle to 21-19 in the third quarter when Mike stepped up while the Eagles (1-5) stepped on themselves.
Facing a 4th-and-1 at the Patriots 20, Franklin County was called for a delay of game while trying to lure the Patriots offsides.
Backed up five yards, the Eagles went for it again. Quarterback Bradley Parcell took aim at 6-foot-7 senior Ethan Adams in the corner of the end zone, but Mike timed his leap perfectly and broke up the potential go-ahead touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Mike reversed a reverse. On 2nd-and-9 at the Patriots' 11, he took the handoff from Quishon Calfee and was expected to toss it to an oncoming wingback for a reverse. Seeing the play had been sniffed out by Franklin County, Mike faked the pitch then broke free. He raced 89 yards untouched for a touchdown and a 28-19 lead.
"Our corners sucked in and that's why they got down the sideline on us," Eagles coach Chris Jones said. "You've got to play your position."
Franklin County answered with a big kickoff return, then rattled off a lightning-quick 48-yard scoring drive capped by Carlton Adams' 30-yard reception and an ensuing 8-yard touchdown run.
That's when Mike nearly went from hero to goat. The Patriots' plan to drain the clock of its remaining six minutes went awry when Mike fumbled near midfield.
"My heart dropped, man," Mike said. "All I knew was to go hard back on defense and get a big stop."
Staked to the ball at the Patriots' 47 with 4:56 to play, the Eagles appeared to be on their way to at least setting up a game-tying field goal attempt when Parcell attempted a pass downfield near the end zone.
But defensive back Cortez Odgen stepped in front of the pass intended once again for Adams and raced 93 yards to put the game on ice.
"I thanked him [Ogden] right after it," Mike said with a smile. "He saved my life."
Mike finished with 162 yards on 28 carries and also had a 3-yard touchdown that gave the Patriots their 21-6 lead.
Parcells paced the Eagles with 72 rushing yards and 111 passing yards. He ran for one score and threw for another.
