BLUEFIELD - Amanda Hollandsworth led Floyd County to a regional golf title on Thursday and came within a playoff hole of taking the individual title as well.
Hollandsworth, the Buffaloes senior who has committed to play in college for Virginia Tech, shot a 2-over-par 72 to tie for first place overall at the Region 2A-West tournament at Fincastle on the Mountain golf course.
Graham's Ben Ramsey won on the first hole of the playoff to claim the regional title.
"Floyd County has a great program," Ramsey said. "Amanda is a great player. I know she is going to Virginia Tech and she will do really well."
But Hollandsworth and the rest of her Floyd County teammates will play on, as will Graham. The Buffaloes won the team title by two shots over the G-Men.
Following Hollandsworth from Floyd in scoring was Alex Conner, who shot 77, and a pair of 86s from Morgan Cox and Jack Williams.
James River, which beat Floyd in the Conference 38 tournament last week, was third overall, missing a team state berth by nine shots. None of the Knights managed to break 80 on Thursday.
Among the six individuals advancing to state were Kory Wilson of Giles (77) and Austin Blevins of Marion (77).
Floyd County coach Skip Bishop said his team was unsure it even reach the regional.
The Buffaloes lost six times during the district season to Giles, but finished second to James River in the Conference 38 Tournament last week to slip past the Spartans.
"We are excited, the team really jelled late in the season," Bishop said. "It didn't seem fair that Giles is in our district and beat us six times this year, the first time we beat them was [last] Monday to get here.
"Somehow you have got to put more emphasis on the regular season, you have got to have that mean something."
