Brookville QB Neal Reynolds hooks up with Ben Hogg for four TDs and on a late try for two.
Saturday, September 14, 2013
BEDFORD - Fourteen seconds remained on the clock at rowdy Liberty High School and Brookville's Neal Reynolds looked lost.
It was now or never for the 6-foot-4 Bees quarterback.
Brookville was trying for a two-point conversion after scoring a late fourth-quarter touchdown, but with Reynolds commanding, the Bees were dazed and confused. A delay of game pushed them back five yards. Then came the snap. The hesitation. The throw.
Receiver Ben Hogg leapt and then fell to the ground in the far side of the end zone. He came up with the ball and visiting Brookville stunned Liberty with a 31-30 come-from-behind win Friday.
"We had planned a scheme in case that situation ever came upon us, and it did and it worked out perfectly," Reynolds said. "It was getting loud. I don't think people heard the play call. I think people thought we were going for one. But coach [Marshall] Schmitt took a risk and it paid off."
Reynolds' pass to Hogg bookended a night in which the two hooked up 15 times for a total of 253 yards. The Bees' QB tossed four touchdowns - all to Hogg - while recording a career-high 309 yards and completing 20 of his 36 passes.
While the second half of the Seminole District opener produced 46 points, the first 24 minutes were highlighted by miscues and mistakes galore. The Minutemen racked up eight first-half penalties and the two squads combined for three fumbles and two interceptions.
Liberty led 15-0 at the break when running back Dustin Hiner broke loose for a 46-yard run and quarterback Austin Porter ran in a 7-yard TD.
Porter finished with 71 yards rushing - his lowest total of the young season - and threw eight passes, none of which were caught. Hiner (116 yards) ran in two touchdowns and finished with more than 100 yards rushing for the third straight week.
Reynolds started the third with a 29-yard pass to Hogg on Brookville's first drive. Minutes later, Liberty answered with a 70-yard touchdown by Hiner up the right side. Reynolds capped the third with a 39-yard pass to Hogg. The sure-handed receiver intercepted a pass a few minutes later, leading to another Reynolds bomb, this one a 29-yarder that Hogg reeled in.
"It makes my job a lot easier," Reynolds said of Hogg's presence. "He's a tremendous athlete. He's the total package."
After Alan Gutierrez kicked a 31-yard field goal, Liberty responded with a touchdown by Devin Carper. The Minutemen, though, could never quite shut the door.
"All we needed was a stop and we just couldn't make a stop," Liberty coach Chris Watts said.
Hogg's role as receiver has never been a secret, but the 5-8 senior has a more prominent role this season. He grabbed Reynolds 23-yard TD pass right before snatching the winning throw.
"That out route is our bread and butter," he said. "When he threw it, I knew I had to go and get it."
