High school roundup: Auburn defeats Lord Botetourt in volleyball

RINER — Madison Shumaker led Auburn with 13 kills and two aces as the Eagles beat Lord Botetourt 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 on Tuesday in a battle of coaching sisters, handing the Cavaliers their second straight loss.

Brooke Bostwick contributed 11 kills, 10 digs, and six aces for the Eagles (2-0), who are coached by Sherry Millirons.

Grayson Newberry had 11 digs, six kills, and six blocks for Lord Botetourt, coached by Millirons’ sister, Julie Conner. Courtney Baker had 13 digs, and Emily Spickard assisted on 16 points for the Cavaliers (2-2).

Volleyball

NONDISTRICT

Salem def. Northside
25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22

A new defensive lineup and a new team attitude paid dividends for the Spartans in a win over Northside.

Barrett Kemp led Salem (3-2) with 16 kills and eight digs and libero Katherine Danstrom was responsible for 30 digs and two aces. Jordan Hayes also chipped in 12 assists and 15 digs.

Aleah Keaton led the Vikings (6-3) with 15 kills and Carly Altizer with 33 assists and 13 digs. Olivia Earls also added 16 digs and three aces for Northside.

Roanoke Catholic def. Christiansburg
25-14, 25-20, 25-10

CHRISTIANSBURG — Danielle Dorman led the Celtics with seven kills and three block as Roanoke Catholic beat the Blue Demons.

Sam Edge had six kills, five digs, and one ace, while Ashley Deer added 17 assists for the Celtics (3-2). Katelynn DiIoia had three aces, and Lindsey Boone added six kills for Christiansburg.

Pulaski County def. William Fleming
25-8, 25-15, 25-20

DUBLIN — Erin Hamric had a team-high nine kills to lead the Cougars to their first victory.

Lauren Shumate had 20 assists and Gracie White had five kills for Pulaski County (1-4) .

Dabnie Thompson had a team-high 22 assists and Jewel Hurt logged 15 digs for William Fleming (2-3).

James River def. Staunton River
25-17, 25-21, 25-11

MONETA — James River took to the road to hand the Golden Eagles (1-5) their third straight loss.

Staunton River’s Taylor Jones had three kills, three digs, and one block.

Brit Caley also added three kills and had a team-high four blocks for the Golden Eagles.

Carroll County def. Floyd County
25-16, 25-21, 25-14

FLOYD — Eustacia Smith had a big game for the Cavaliers, recording nine kills and seven aces as Carroll County defeated the Buffaloes (2-3).

Jessica Sheek had 11 kills and three aces, and Cheyenne Strickland added eight kills and nine assists for Carroll County (1-2).

Cassie Muncy had 16 digs and a pair of aces for the Buffaloes. Dulia Walker added five kills, and Tiffany Smith assisted on 12 points for Floyd County.

Covington def. Eastern Montgomery 25-12, 25-16, 16-25, 25-16

COVINGTON — Leteashia Clarke recorded 10 kills, five aces and five blocks and SaMone Moore added seven kills and eight digs for the Cougars (4-1), who put away the visiting Mustangs.

Sarah Simpkins led Eastern Montgomery (1-5) with eight kills, eight assists and two aces, while Afton Graham added four kills and seven aces.

Narrows def. Craig County
25-18, 25-12, 25-15

NEW CASTLE — Shana Davis had a team-high 24 assists as the Green Wave scored a road win against the Rockets (1-4).

Tiffany Perdue logged a team-high 13 kills, six digs, and four aces for Narrows, which handed Craig County it’s third straight loss.

Grayson County def. Richlands
25-19, 25-20, 25-19

INDEPENDENCE — Camryn McGrady had 19 kills and added seven blocks as the Blue Devils took a straight-game victory over the Blue Tornado.

Taylor Cannaday had 31 assists for Grayson County ((3-1).

Mac Cordill recorded 29 digs and six kills, while Sarah Compton added seven kills for Richlands.

Amherst County def. Rockbridge County 25-23, 25-18, 25-13

AMHERST — Hailey Fore helped the Lancers avenge an earlier loss by contributing eight kills, three digs, and an ace. Emily Power added 15 assists and 12 digs for Amherst County.

Shaela Coffey had eight digs, five kills, and three aces for the Wildcats (3-2). Mikhala Stafford added 14 assists and seven digs, while Kassidy Hopkins added 12 digs for Rockbridge County.

SWVA Home School def. Dayspring Christian 25-17, 25-11, 10-25, 26-24

Elle Goad had 10 aces, seven assists and thee kills as the Conquerors defeated the Lions.

Hannaleah Hoyt added four aces, five kills and three blocks for SW Virginia Homeschool (1-2).

The Eagles remained undefeated (6-0, 4-0) with a four-game win in the opposing team’s gym.

Patrick Henry def. Blacksburg
25-21, 25-23, 10-25, 11-25, 15-13

BLACKSBURG — Patrick Henry’s Abby Wolpert had eight kills, Annalee Lowman had 19 digs, and Bradley Smith added four blocks and three kills as the Patriots spoiled the Bruins’ season-opener.

Abigail Phillips had 13 kills, seven digs, and four aces, and Catherine Boyle added six kills, 18 digs, and four aces for Blacksburg.

SEMINOLE DISTRICT

E.C. Glass def. Liberty 25-21, 25-14, 25-15

LYNCHBURG — Liberty’s Audrey McCombs dished out 24 assists and Casey Carr had 11 digs, three kills and two blocks, but the visiting Minettes fell to the Hilltoppers.

MaHalea Schicchitano had 13 digs and Samantha Brown added an ace and seven digs for Liberty (1-2).

Eastern Mennonite def. North Cross
25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12

Sam Jacobs’ eight aces were a major factor as the Flames went on the road and defeated the Raiders in five games.

Lauren Weaver and Leah Winger each added 11 kills for Eastern Mennonite (3-2, 1-0).

Julie Abbott had 21 assists, five aces, and four kills for North Cross (3-5, 0-1). Danielle Dennis contributed five kills, five blocks, four digs, and three aces.

CHRISTIANSBURG — Emily Turpin had eight kills for Pathway Christian and Rebekah Bolen added four kills and four aces as the Panthers downed the Warriors.
