VOLLEYBALL

Hanna Podeschi had 14 assists, seven kills and four aces as Hidden Valley defeated Franklin County in three games, 25-11, 25-11, 25-22 to open the 2013 volleyball season.

Drew Freeland added 14 assists and eight aces, and Georgia Farthing finished with six kills and eight digs.

Glenvar def. William Byrd
18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-13

Holly Wilkes had eight kills and nine digs and Megan Ward added seven kills and 10 digs as the Highlanders defeated the Terriers.

Lexi Trinchere dished out 23 assists and four kills, and Amber Smith and Haley Green each added four blocks and four kills for Glenvar (2-0).

Floyd County def. Christiansburg
24-26, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19

FLOYD - Riley Underwood had eight kills, three aces and 18 digs, and Tiffany Smith served five aces to go with 20 assists as the Buffaloes defeated the Blue Demons.

Cassie Muncy also chipped in seven aces and 14 digs for Floyd County (1-1).

Liberty def. Staunton River
13-25, 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7

MONETA - Liberty won its season opener after the Golden Eagles (0-2) forced a fifth game in a close Game 4.

Katie Martin led the Minettes with eight kills and three blocks. Katelyn Carter added seven kills, two aces and two blocks.

Audrey McCombs dished out 23 assists to go with her four aces.

Staunton River was led by Katelyn Dellis with 21 assists, three kills, seven aces. Taylor Jones added 11 kills. Emma Moran had five kills and Taylor Creasy finished with eight digs.

Lord Botetourt def. Salem
25-23, 25-23, 25-21

Greysen Newbery had 10 kills and 11 digs, and Emily Spickard provided 35 assists as the Cavaliers swept the Spartans.

Michelle Kimball and Courtney Baker each had eight kills for Lord Botetourt (2-0).

Rockbridge County def. Amherst County
25-10, 25-11, 25-15

LEXINGTON - Lauren Rowsey had nine kills and 16 digs, and Sarah Mast served eight aces as the Wildcats swept the Lancers.

Mikhala Stafford dished out 21 assists and Shaela Coffey added eight kills for Rockbridge County (2-1).

James River def. Alleghany
19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23

BUCHANAN - Jamie Eastman had seven kills and McKenzie Talbot delivered 14 assists as the Knights got past the Mountaineers.

Alyssa Ford had three kills for James River.

Galax def. Rural Retreat
25-20, 25-16, 25-11

GALAX - Morgan Neff had eight kills and five digs for the Maroon Tide (2-0).

Paige Hanks added five kills and seven aces for Galax, which had 17 aces as a team.

Stevie Parks led Rural Retreat (0-1) with eight kills and seven digs. Montana Monahan finished with 23 digs.

MARION - Madison Asher had 10 kills and Kari Walker handed out 25 assists as the Falcons defeated the Scarlet Hurricane.

Peyton Dotson added eight kills for Abingdon.

Taylor Richardson and Baker Cullop led Marion (0-2) with six kills apiece and Jordan Williams added 12 assists.

North Cross def. SWVA Home School 25-16, 25-15, 21-25, 20-25, 15-11

Julie Abbot pounded 11 kills and nine aces, and Amy Eggleston added 10 kills and five aces as the Raiders withstood a Conquerors rally to win in five games.

Rosalie List chipped in five kills and Danielle Dennis added four kills for North Cross (2-1).

Grayson County def. Chilhowie
25-12, 25-12, 25-17

INDEPENDENCE - Camryn McGrady had nine kills, and Emily Lindsey added eight kills and three aces as the Blue Devils swept the Warriors.

Mary Meier added six kills for Grayson County (2-1).

FIELD HOCKEY

North Cross 4, Covenant 0

Morgan Sturm scored twice and Avery Sturm and Anna Cooper added a goal as the Raiders defeated Covenant.

Goalkeeper Anna Robison made three saves for North Cross (1-0).
