Salem's Harrison O'Keefe won his first-round singles match and advanced to the third round in doubles Saturday at the USTA Boys 18-Under National Hardcourt tennis championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
O'Keefe, 17, defeated Daniel Rayl of Carmel, Ind. 6-3, 6-1 to reach today's second round in the 256-player singles draw at Kalamazoo College against Matthew Mendez of Mount Pleasant, S.C.
O'Keefe and Sebastian Beltrame of Windermere, Fla., stopped Nicolas Bradley of Waldwick, N.J. and Nicholai Westergaard of Manlius, N.Y. 6-1, 6-2 in a second-round doubles match. O'Keefe and Beltrame are scheduled to face Christopher Eubanks of Atlanta and Korey Lovett of Brevard, N.C. in a third-round match today.
O'Keefe, who has committed to South Carolina, helped Salem win the 2011 VHSL Group AA boys tennis title. He has spent the last two school years training and taking classes on line at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C.
