WILLIAMSBURG — Andrew Peterson (Cave Spring/UVa-Wise) and Hayden Smith (Hidden Valley/Allegheny College) each hit two-RBI singles during a five-run fifth inning, and Roanoke Post 3 went on to beat Newport News 12-6 in the first round of the American Legion Virginia senior state tournament at the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex.
Harrison Richards, a 2012 Cave Spring graduate who now plays at Roanoke College, improved to 5-0 after allowing four hits and five runs over 6 2⁄3 innings for Post 3 (16-2).
Leadoff hitter Griffin Stanley, a Cave Spring graduate who will attend Eastern Mennonite in the fall, had two hits and scored three times.
Post 3 will play Albemarle at 5 p.m. today in the second round. Albemarle defeated Vienna 14-2.
