Roanoke Post 3, baseball champion of American Legion District 9 West, opens play in the state tournament versus Denbigh Post 368 at 5 p.m. Monday at Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex. Pitcher Harrison Richards (Cave Spring, Roanoke College) will start for Roanoke.
Post 3 (15-2, 10-0 ) is making its third straight trip to the state tournament. Winner of the double-elimination affair that lasts through Aug. 3 advances to the Southeast Region tournament starting Aug. 5 in Asheboro, N.C.
The Roanoke-Denbigh clash is the third of four games today. Other matchups include Post 74 Albemarle vs. Post 180 Vienna at 10 a.m.; Post 325 Danville vs. Post 175 Mechanicsville at 1 p.m.; and Post 21 Winchester vs. Post 39 Williamsburg in the 8 p.m. nightcap. Four more games will be played Wednesday.
Roanoke twice beat District 9 East champ Danville. Post 3 is hitting .343 as a team, averaging more than nine runs a game, and has an earned run average of 2.47. Roanoke has a seven-game winning streak after winning the West tournament last week.
Tanner McCoy (North Cross) leads in batting average (.523), RBIs (22) and home runs (3). Steve Klaiber (Cave Spring, UVa-Wise) is hitting .452 with eight doubles. Griffin Stanley (Cave Spring, Eastern Mennonite) is hitting .400 and leads the team with 22 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.
Richards is the team leader in strikeouts (39), innings (45), and is tied in wins (four) with Jake Schuyler (Cave Spring), the likely Game 2 starter. Schuyler sports four wins and an 0.81 ERA.
