NEWPORT NEWS - Khalid Abdullah rushed for two touchdowns and Dan Schiele threw for another as the East broke open a five-point game with three straight second-half touchdowns on the way to a 35-16 win over the West in the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star football game Friday night at CNU's Darling Stadium.
Abdullah, a James Madison signee from Heritage-Newport News, had 95 of the East's 253 rushing yards. However, it was Schiele, a Tabb graduate who threw for 98 yards and will attend JMU in the fall, who earned co-offensive MVP honors for the East team.
The West trailed 14-9 after getting a safety midway through the third quarter, but it was all East after that, starting with a 58-yard TD pass from Schiele to Freeman McPhearson (King William).
Floyd County graduate Cole Worrell caught a 3-yard TD pass from Honaker's Ty Hall with 1:07 left in the game.
Amherst County's Marquis Brown scored the West's first TD in the second quarter.
Offensively, the West struggled most of the night, getting outgained 351-243.
Pulaski County graduate James King, who will attend VMI, earned a co-MVP award on defense with Union's Cody Craft for the West.
After 21 years, this was the last all-star game to be played in Newport News. Next year, the games begin a three-year stay in Lynchburg.
