Player of the Year
RYAN COALE | Rockbridge County | Junior
COALE played infield, outfield, and pitched in his first two varsity seasons before taking up catching. That will be his position at VCU, where he is already verbally committed after fielding an additional 10 Division I offers. He also played third, shortstop, and pitched this year. A left-handed hitter, he started the season batting .818 and leveled off to .436 with four triples, a home run, 10 steals, 16 runs, and 11 RBIs. He pitched the No. 6 Wildcats to an upset district tournament victory over Lord Botetourt.
Pitcher of the Year
RYAN LAURIA | Hidden Valley | Senior
LAURIA, the River Ridge District player of the year, went 7-2 with a 1.37 earned run average. In 51 innings, he struck out 65. Coming off arm problems that shut him down for part of his junior season, he came back as good as or better than ever. He also made a successful career debut in the lineup. Lauria lost a one-run, eight-inning game to AA runner-up Tunstall in the Region IV semifinals. He will pitch for Louisville next year. Before that, he will play in the VHSCA all-star game.
