High schools: Riverheads earns spot in A-1 baseball final

Ethan Whitehead allowed just two hits over five innings of relief, and Riverheads shut out Clintwood 5-0 on Saturday at Salem Kiwanis Field to advance to the VHSL Group A Division 1 final.

Chance Staton and Logan Wolfe had two RBIs apiece for Clintwood, which will play William Campbell at Kiwanis for the state title at 10 today.

AA BASEBALL

Sherando 4, Amherst County 3

PULASKI - Jacob Carney hit a home run as Sherando (25-1) overcame an early one-run deficit at Calfee Park and handed Amherst County (25-1) its first loss of the season.

Tunstall 3, Woodgrove 2

PULASKI - Daymon Totherow hit a two-run double in the second inning, and the Trojans shut out Woodgrove (17-8) the rest of the way to reach their eighth state title game.

Tunstall (23-1) last reached the title game in 2011 and is going for its fifth championship.

AA SOFTBALL

Woodgrove 6, Fort Defiance 2

RADFORD - The defending champs scored four times in the fourth inning and advanced to today's 1 p.m. final against Cave Spring at Radford University.

The Wolverines got back-to-back two-run hits - a double by Hallie Daugherty and a single from Adriana Erickson - that highlighted a five-hit inning.

Carli Hill led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run for Fort Defiance.

A-1 SOFTBALL

Madison County 4, Eastside 0

Madison County (24-4) scored a pair of two-out runs in the fourth inning as a results of a walk, two errors and a wild pitch and the Mountaineers went on to eliminate Eastside (22-4).

Winning pitcher Lauren Seale struck out eight on the way to pitching a five-hitter at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem .

Honaker 2, East Rockingham 1

Cassie Baker's two-out single in the top of the seventh scored Leah Elswick and Honaker went on to down East Rockingham (19-7-1).

Honaker last won a softball state title in 1988.

AA BOYS SOCCER

E.C. Glass 1, Briar Woods 0

RADFORD - Matt McAden caught up to a pass from Jack Valentine and beat Falcons goalkeeper Arni Gunnarsson with a wicked shot just over an hour into the match to lift the Hilltoppers into the Group AA boys soccer final.

E.C. Glass plays Blacksburg at 10 a.m. today in the final.

AA BOYS TENNIS

E.C. Glass 5, Briar Woods 2

BLACKSBURG - Thacher Jennings and Mitchell Swann teamed up for a straight-sets win in doubles after winning their respective singles matches, and E.C. Glass won its eighth boys state title - but the first for the Hilltoppers since 2000 .

The 13-year drought was the second-longest state title dry spell for the Hilltoppers since they won their first VHSL boys tennis title in 1973. They went 14 years between title No. 4 in 1984, and No. 5 in 1998.

BLACKSBURG - The James Monroe High School duo of Fitzhugh Johnson and Walton Mahone earned their first state championship by downing John Handley's Parker Wilson and Taylor Watts 6-2, 6-1.

A BOYS TENNIS

Wilson pair wins doubles

RADFORD - Miles Harnad and Connor Spotts of Wilson Memorial downed John Ferguson and Luke Funkhouser of Gate City 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 to claim the boys doubles title.

AA GIRLS TENNIS

Jamestown 5, Western Albemarle 3

BLACKSBURG - Jamestown won a pair of doubles matches in straight sets to break what was a tie score after singles play and claim its seventh VHSL girls tennis title at the Virginia Tech tennis center. The other six state titles were all won between 2000 and 2006.

Hunt and Kristin Lilly (J) d. Sadie Gupton and Barton 6-4, 6-2; Wallace and Sharp (J) d. Clifton and Park 6-1, 6-0.

BLACKSBURG - Kathryn Bock and Jessie Nolan of John Handley won their second straight VHSL Group AA girls tennis title by downing Jamestown's Leah Walter and Anna Walter 6-2, 6-2.

A GIRLS TENNIS

Mason completes sweep

RADFORD - Kynadi Mauney and Carrinton Mauney made it a clean sweep for the George Mason girls tennis team when they beat Rosa Smith and Emily Smith of Gate City 6-2, 6-2 for the Group A doubles title.

Mason claimed the singles, doubles and team titles in Group A girls tennis.
