High schools: Patrick Henry freshman falls in Group AAA tennis quarterfinals

FAIRFAX - Patrick Henry freshman Ciara Mulcahy saw her 2013 tennis season come to an end Thursday as she fell 6-1, 6-0 to Cosby's Lauren Denuel in the Group AAA girls singles quarterfinals at Jefferson District Park.

Denuel will face Olivia Large of Frank Cox in today's semifinals. The other semifinal will pit Northwest Region champion Rachel Halinski of Forest Park against Lizzie Stewart of Oakton.

The boys semifinals will feature Brett Moorhead of Cosby vs. Frederic Lilland of Princess Anne, and Shyam Venkat of Henrico vs. Nik Padmanabhan of McLean

GROUP A GIRLS

Mason frosh wins singles

BLACKSBURG - George Mason High School freshman Mariam Salakaia won the singles title over Gate City sophomore Rosa Smith.

Salakaia, who hails from the Republic of Georgia, defeated Caitlin Williams of Graham 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. Smith moved into the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Appomattox Regional's Ginna Slattum.

Smith lost in the 2012 Group A final to Bland County's Grace Sarver.
