GALAX - Michaela Carter pitched a two-hitter and helped her cause with a homer and double to lead Northwood to a 5-0 win over Auburn in a Region C Division 1 softball semifinal Wednesday at Galax High School.
Auburn (16-6), which had a first-round bye, was trying to clinch a state tournament berth for the first time. Instead, the Panthers (16-6) clinched a state berth for the first time.
Northwood plays Holston in today's regional final. Holston advanced to a regional final for the fourth straight year.
Carter struck out nine and walked two.
The Eagles hurt themselves with four errors, all by the middle infielders.
"Defensively, we were a train wreck," Auburn coach David Hurd said. "They outpitched us, they outhit us, they played better defense.
"We usually hit it a lot better."
Auburn missed shortstop and leadoff hitter Taylor Helms, who suffered a torn ACL on May 17. Auburn finished 1-2 without her.
"It kind of threw everything out of sync," Hurd said. "It rearranged our defense. And she was our spark plug."
Northwood scored three runs in the first on a Carter double, an error, a walk, an error and Carey Gosnell's two-RBI single.
The Panthers added a run in the second on a hit and two errors.
Auburn's Amber Linkous relieved Makayla Burlingame in the fourth. Linkous gave up a solo homer to Carter in the sixth.
Orange County 6, Franklin County 2
ORANGE - Pitcher Ashya Richardson had 13 strikeouts and allowed only two hits in a complete game pitched, leading Orange County (22-4) past the Eagles (16-10) in the Northwest Region semifinals.
Ashley Williams had three hits and one run scored for the Fighting Hornets.
Franklin County scored after two hitters were walked and Alexis Williams had one hit to drive in two runs.
Orange advanced to play Osbourn in regional finals.
REGION C DIVISION 1
Holston 4, Parry McCluer 3
GALAX - Amelia Wampler's two-run home run helped the Cavaliers to an early lead and they held off the Fighting Blues for a semifinal win at Mountain View Park.
Wampler, Devynne Stiltner and Mariah Morrison all had two hits for Holston (15-6). Morrison was the winning pitcher, giving up 10 hits and striking out five.
Parry McCluer tied the game in the fourth inning on a home run by Christina VanBrocklin. Holston scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth on an error, and Stiltner drove home an insurance run for a 4-2 lead.
Freshman pitcher Megan Harmon struck out five for Parry McCluer (12-7).
Covington 9, Galax 0
COVINGTON - Steven Blevins had two hits and two RBIs to help the Cougars baseball program claim its first state berth in school history.
Teammate Jordan Miller added with one double and two RBIs. Covington pitcher Tanner Paxton had six strikeouts and allowed only three hits in a complete game pitched.
Covington (14-9) advanced to play Auburn in the Region C final at Covington on Friday.
The Cougars have won 10 games in a row.
Auburn 28, Holston 8
COVINGTON - The Eagles (15-6) trailed 5-1 after the first inning, but outscored Holston 27-3 the rest of the way to advance to Region C Division 1 final - and earn a spot in the Group A Division 1 state quarterfinals.
Auburn and Covington have not played each other this season. Auburn has won six of its last seven games.
Radford 4, Graham 0
WYTHEVILLE - Caleb Finley scored the first three goals of the game to advance the undefeated Bobcats (18-0) to the Region C final.
Sean Smith added a goal, and Carson Cooper, Zach Turk and Jake Grant each tallied one assist.
The Bobcats play Galax in the Region C Final at George Wythe High School on Friday.
Galax 5, Giles 1
WYTHEVILLE - Andres Medina scored twice for Galax (20-0) as it advanced to the Region C final game to play Radford.
Also scoring for Galax was Mario Carranza, Junior Espinoza, and Oliver Gonzalez, each scoring one goal.
Lord Botetourt 3, E.C. Glass 2
LYNCHBURG - Ally Duvall scored with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Cavaliers to a win over the Hilltoppers at City Stadium on Tuesday.
Gretchen Goldsmith scored the first goal for Lord Botetourt (15-4-1) and Karis Lumsden put the Cavaliers up 2-1.
Brooke Valentine tied the game with just over a minute to play before Duvall's shot from 25 yards out put Botetourt into today's semifinals against Jefferson Forest.
Kelsey Thomson scored Glass' first goal and Hannah Royer made six saves. Miriah Martin made 16 saves for Lord Botetourt.
Radford 4, Giles 0
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - Megan Mitchell scored two goals for the Bobcats (15-2-1), who qualified for the Group A state quarterfinals.
Ariana Perez and Madeline Marshall also scored for Radford, while goalie Amanda Joyce had three saves.
Goalie Beth Stump made 12 saves for Giles (9-7-1).
James River 3, Graham 1
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - Kendall Moyer, Lauren Fleming and Autumn Clonch scored and James River clinched a spot in the Group A quarterfinals.
Whitney Browning scored for Graham.
James River (14-4) will play Radford for the Region C title in a game that will likely be moved closer to the two schools' locations.
The Bobcats and Knights have played twice this year. Radford won both games - 4-2 at home, and 4-0 at home.
Glenvar doubles team takes regional
RADFORD - Alex Dunkenberger and Colton Walls of Glenvar defeated Garrett Bailey and Mike Vaughan of Grayson County 7-5, 6-4 to win the regional title at Radford University and earn a berth in next week's Group A semifinals.
Glenvar and George Wythe advanced to today's team championship.
The Highlanders dispatched Grayson County 5-0, while Wythe eliminated Parry McCluer 6-1. The final is scheduled for 9 a.m. today with the winner advancing to the Group A tournament.

Radford, George Wythe reach team final
RADFORD - It took 7 hours and 25 minutes but Radford made it worth the time as the Bobcats outlasted Graham 5-4 in a team semifinal at Radford University.
Radford trailed 4-2 after singles before winning all three doubles matches including a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory by Leah Patterson and Samantha Brooks at No. 3 doubles over MyKenzie Roach and Misbah Muzaffer.
The team match began at 9 a.m. and ended at 4:25 p.m.
Radford will play for the title at 9 a.m. today against George Wythe, a 5-1 winner over Bath County in the other semifinal.
Graham's duo of Caitlin Williams and Rebecca Day came back to win the doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Radford's Cypress Beach and Neha Desai. Beach and Desai defeated Williams and Day in the team match.
