Timesland Swimmer of the Year

JONATHAN GOMEZ | PATRICK HENRY | Senior

GOMEZ, who moved to Roanoke from Jersey City, N.J., at the end of the summer, posted the top time in Timesland in the 100-yard butterfly and 500 freestyle and had top-10 times in six of the eight individual events, including four in the top four.

FIRST TEAM

ZAK DEHLI | STAUNTON RIVER | Senior

Moves up from the second team in 2012 after winning the 50 freestyle at the Group AA meet in a Timesland-best time of 21.56.

PETER D'ORTENZIO | HIDDEN VALLEY | Senior

One of two Timesland boys' swimmers, along with Jonathan Gomez, to post top-five times in four events. Also was a fixture on two Titans' relay teams that put up Timesland's best times.

JACOB GIBBS | HIDDEN VALLEY | Junior

Came back to win the 100 freestyle at the Group AA state meet after finishing second in the 50. Anchored state-champion 200 medley relay.

BEN KENNEDY | GLENVAR | Junior

Strong contender for Timesland swimmer of the year who became the rare Group A swimmer to win state championships, in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, against Group AA swimmers.

MAC McNALLY | NORTH CROSS | Senior

Repeat first-team selection who will swim next year for Sewanee. McNally had a pair of runner-up finishes in the Virginia Independent Schools state meet and had the top time in Timesland in the 200 freestyle.

BLAKE NOWAKOWSKI | JEFFERSON FOREST | Junior

Moves up from second-team All-Timesland in 2012. Finished second in the 200 IM at the Group AA state meet with the best time in Timesland this year, 1:55.47. Took second in the 100 freestyle.

RONNIE PIEMONTE | CHRISTIANSBURG | Sophomore

Captured the Group AA diving championship for the second straight year and remains on pace to earn four consecutive titles. Also played basketball for the Blue Demons.

BEN SCHMIDT | HIDDEN VALLEY | Junior

Makes the team by virtue of posting the best time in Timesland in the 100 breaststroke, 1:01.94. Cut more than two seconds off his seed time at the Group AA meet.

COACH OF THE YEAR

SHERI VAUGHN | Hidden Valley

Vaughn finished out her career in style, taking Hidden Valley to the boys' state championship after finishing second in 2012. It was the fourth selection as boys coach of the year for Vaughn, who announced late in the season that she was stepping down. She was girls coach of the year four times.
