Cole Hedge scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Haga in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Salem a 3-2 nondistrict baseball win over Patrick Henry on Friday.
Zach Mineroldi had two hits and was the winning pitcher for the Spartans (3-2), going 1 2⁄3 innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.
Jimmy Butler had a pair of hits and scored a run for the Patriots (0-5), which tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Rob Brailsford pitched two innings in relief for PH, and took the loss.
Liberty 8, Heritage 4
BEDFORD - Lance Parker drove in two runs as Liberty downed Heritage in the Seminole District opener for both schools.
Ryan Hensley hit a solo homer and Dylan Oleson had two hits for Liberty (1-1, 1-0). Sage Pedro drove in two runs and David Pultz hit a solo homer for Heritage (2-2, 0-1).
Oleson earned the win with 4 1⁄3 innings of work, striking out five and giving up two hits.
Alleghany 12, Covington 2, 5 inn.
LOW MOOR - Mountaineer Kendall Kessinger led his team from both the plate and the mound with three hits of his own, while giving up two hits and striking out seven.
Ethan Nicely had two hits and two RBIs for Alleghany (3-0).
For Covington (1-2), Luke Crawford had an RBI double.
Blacksburg 9, Lord Botetourt 5
DALEVILLE - Jake Shrewer hit a grand slam to highlight a seven-run sixth inning for Blacksburg.
Thomas Hughes hit a go-ahead two-run homer for the Bruins (4-1), and Alex Shimozono doubled twice.
Zack Kelly had three hits, including a two-run homer for the Cavaliers(3-1), which committed six errors.
Hughes was also the winning pitcher. He gave up 11 hits and four strikeouts over seven innings.
Franklin Co. 14, Patrick Co. 3, 5 inn.
ROCKY MOUNT - Ryan Peevey drove in five runs on three hits as Franklin County felled Patrick County in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Ryan Brewer and Chad Huston drove in two runs each for the Eagles (3-3), and winning pitcher Huston struck out four and allowed four hits.
Chase Davis tripled and scored a run for Patrick County (1-3).
Pulaski County 5, Northside 2
DUBLIN - Jake Tabor scored three runs as Pulaski County downed Northside.
Tyler Dotson drove in two runs on two hits for Pulaski County (3-0).
Tyler Wolfe drove in both of the runs for Northside (4-1).
Winning pitcher Brayden Morris went five innings, struck out five and allowed five hits. Northside's Jeremy Ragland allowed four runs on five hits.
Magna Vista 16, William Fleming 1, 5 inn.
RIDGEWAY - Dillon Crowder drove in five runs as Magna Vista downed William Fleming in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Richard Evans drove in four runs, and Dante Hampton and Holden Watkins added three hits each for the Warriors (1-3).
Tyler Chumbly drove in the run for William Fleming.
Christiansburg 8, Bassett 0
CHRISTIANSBURG - Aaron Jackson drove in two runs on three hits and pitched five innings of one-hit baseball for Christiansburg (3-0).
Kemper Terry struck out two batters for Bassett (1-2).
Floyd County 10, Fort Chiswell 9, 8 inn.
FLOYD - Zinny Kuchenbuch hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Buffaloes (1-3).
Kuchenbuch also had a three-run home run. Floyd County pitcher Gus Underwood had seven strikeouts and allowed six hits.
For Fort Chiswell (2-1), Coleman Thomas had two hits, including a home run.
Jefferson Forest 4, Brookville 0
FOREST - J.R. Breeden struck out nine, walked one and allowed just three hits for Jefferson Forest(3-1, 1-0 Seminole District).
Zach Coleman had one hit and two RBIs.
For Brookville, pitcher Evan Mitchell had seven strikeouts and four walks.
Chilhowie 11, Gatlinburg-Pittman (Tenn.) 5
GATLINBURG, Tenn. - Jeffrey Johnson had three hits and three RBIs to lead Chilhowie (3-1) past Gatlinburg-Pittman (5-1).
Teammate Caleb Sheets struck out seven and allowed only one hit in five innings pitched.
James River 8, Radford 7
BUCHANAN - Down 7-0 after two innings, James River (2-2) scored the next eight runs to claim the victory over Radford.
Josh Jones hit a walk-off single for the Knights. Also for James River, Will Arney had two hits, an RBI and struck out two.
For Radford, Joey Sutphin had two hits and an RBI, and Drew Cox had two hits and three RBIs.
Auburn 12, George Wythe 0
WYTHEVILLE - Gabe Spencer struck out 13 batters over six innings for Auburn.
Cody Akers drove in two runs and Allen Huff and Tanner DeHart drove in one apiece for Auburn (3-0).
Grant Anders and Bryce Grimes had a hit each for George Wythe (0-2).
Jacob Collins pitched three innings and struck out two for George Wythe.
Narrows 10, Giles 10, 7 inn.
NARROWS - Narrows scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. But the game was called after that due to darkness.
Kelly Dent hit a two-run home run and a solo shot, finishing with four RBIs for Narrows (1-1-1). Josh Dalton scored a pair of runs for Giles (1-3-1).
Northside 9, Cave Spring 0
Northside pitcher Daniel Grammer struck out six and held the Knights (0-4) to five hits as his team defeated Cave Spring on Thursday. Viking Matt Culicerto had two hits, three RBIs and a two-run homer.
For the Knights, pitcher Jake Schuyler had six strikeouts in five innings.
Patrick County 10, Chatham 9
STUART - Chase Barnes scored on a bases-loaded walk to Carson Clifton in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Patrick County its first win of the season on Wednesday.
Liberty 2, Lord Botetourt 0
TROUTVILLE - Morgan Newbrough hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning and later scored for the Minnettes in the Botetourt Bash at the Botetourt County Sports Complex.
Kasey Carr also had a hit and a stolen base for Liberty (3-0).
Winning pitcher Cassidy Hensley struck out nine, allowed three hits and gave up a walk.
Kristen Topple had a single and double for Lord Botetourt (2-1). Pitcher Kendra Wood took the loss. She struck out 10 and gave up two hits and an earned run.
Blacksburg 12, Radford 10
BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg (3-0) rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and went on to beat Radford (1-2).
Addie Graves had four hits and an RBI. Teammate Courtney Cumbee had two hits and recorded three RBIs.
For the Bobcats, Heaven Thomas had two hits and two RBIs. Haley O'Brien and Julia Hopkins had two hits and scored two runs.
Parry McCluer 5, Nelson County 4
BUENA VISTA - Logan Buzzard doubled in McKenzie Henderson in the sixth inning for the go-ahead run, and the Fighting Blues (3-0) held off Nelson County (0-3).
Buzzard also had a triple for Parry McCluer. Katlyn Bradley had three hits, and Ragen Smith and Henderson had two hits apiece.
Winning pitcher Megan Harmon struck out three and walked one in two innings of relief.
Auburn 5, Grayson County 4
RINER - Rachel Smoot singled in Makayla Burlingame with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for Auburn (4-0).
Olivia Cleary hit a solo home run for the Eagles, and Carrie Rogers stole two bases. Burlingame finished with two hits and an RBI.
Grayson County (2-2) made the score 3-3 in the sixth inning with a two-run homer from Grace Circle, and then took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Amber Sowers drove in the tying run for Auburn, setting the stage for Smoot.
Eagles pitcher Amber Linkous struck out two batters in relief.
Giles 11, Narrows 1, 6 inn.
PEARISBURG - Tori Belcher drove in four runs on two hits as Giles downed Narrows in a game called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Giles (1-2) scored five runs in the first inning, one in the third, and Ashley Thornhill drove in two runs as part of a five-run sixth.
Kayln Neal scored for Narrows (1-3).
Winning pitcher Jennifer Bradley struck out four and allowed one hit over three innings. Tiffany Perdue pitched six inning for Narrows
William Byrd 3, Glenvar 1, 8 inn.
Haley Parrish belted a two-run double in the eighth inning to lift William Byrd (2-3) over Glenvar (2-2).
Cara Neikirk got the win for the Terriers, striking out 12 and allowing five hits in eight innings.
Rachel Guilliams went 2 for 4 for the Highlanders.
Rockbridge County 13, Monticello 0
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Pitcher Anna Hartman gave up two hits and recorded eight strikeouts as the Wildcats (4-0) defeated Monticello (2-2) in a game called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Tailee Root had two doubles and two RBIs for the Wildcats, and Logan Fitzgerald had three hits and five RBIs.
Parry McCluer 15, Eastern Montgomery 0, 5 inn.
ELLISTON - Meagan Harmon recorded 10 strikeouts for the Fighting Blues as they defeated Eastern Montgomery (1-2) on Thursday.
Also for Parry McCluer (2-0), Haley Thomas scored four runs and knocked in five runs.
For Eastern Montgomery, Chloe Phoenix had a double.
Franklin County 2, Hidden Valley 1
Conner Hardy tied the score for visiting Franklin County in the first, and Patrick Palum scored the game-winner five minutes into the second half for the Eagles (3-2).
Blacksburg 1, Lord Botetourt 0
DALEVILLE - Bruin Geinda Smith scored the only goal of the game to lead Blacksburg (1-0) narrowly by the Cavaliers (2-1). The goal was assisted by Teig Lesko.
For the Cavs, starting Goalie Caleb Shockley left the game with an injured leg in the first half, and was replaced by Robert Switzer.
Bassett 3, Christiansburg 2
CHRISTIANSBURG - Ethan Truman, Jesse Estudillo and Garrett Cooper all scored second-half goals for the Bengals (2-2).
Lucas Draper made eight saves for Bassett, which got out to a 3-1 lead after Cooper's goal. Lucas Draper made eight saves.
Jake Hamley scored both goals for Christiansburg (2-1), and Joe Pauli made five saves.
Pulaski County 2, George Wythe 1
DUBLIN - Gavier Wagner led the Cougars (2-2) to the victory by scoring both goals. Goalie Chandler Quesenberry recorded eight saves.
For George Wythe (0-3), Josh Monday had one goal.
Magna Vista 0, William Fleming 0
RIDGEWAY - William Fleming (1-1-1) was lead by goalie Moore Dolue's eight saves.
For Magna Vista, keeper Chris Dawson made seven saves.
Alleghany 10, James River 0
LOW MOOR - Patrick Burns netted five goals as Alleghany (1-0) defeated James River.
Milliyon Fesseha scored three goals and had four assists, while Tanner Seay and Nehemiah Vance added one goal apiece for Alleghany (1-0).
Noah Green made one save for the Mountaineers.
Marion 4, Rural Retreat 2
RURAL RETREAT - Marion scored three goals in the second half to earn a win over the Indians.
Isaac Glass scored two goals and Logan Billings and Keith Norris scored one each for Marion (2-0).
Steven Dunford scored both goals for Rural Retreat (1-2), which led 2-1 at the half.
Liberty 5, Heritage 1
LYNCHBURG - Laura Garbarini scored four goals and assisted on another as Liberty (1-1, 1-0) downed Heritage (0-2, 0-1) in the district opener.
Logan Byers scored the other goal for Liberty (1-1, 1-0) and Lizzie Boone assisted on two of Garbarini's goals.
Cierra Calloway scored for Heritage (0-2, 0-1).
Jillian Blackburn made seven saves for Liberty, which led 5-0 at the half. Vicky White stopped eight shots for Heritage.
Hidden Valley 3, Franklin County 2
ROCKY MOUNT - Emma Blake scored off of a rebound following a direct kick with three minutes to play, and Hidden Valley (1-1-1) held on to win.
Blake scored two goals on the day and Murray Myer added a goal for the Titans, which trailed 2-1 at the half.
Shakim Holland-Deskins and Mikayla Cannaday scored a goal apiece for Franklin County (2-2-1).
Kayla Wright made three saves for the Eagles, and Sarah Mitchell made four for the Titans.
Salem 3, E.C. Glass 1
Skyler Hayes; Samantha Samson and Allie Garst scored for the Spartans (3-1).
Salem led 1-0 at the half, but Glass came back to tie the score.
Samson scored the eventual game-winner with about 15 minutes left to put the Spartans up for good.
Patrick Henry 1, Osbourn 1
LYNCHBURG - Maggie Croft scored the equalizer in the final minute of play as Osbourn earned a draw against Patrick Henry at the E.C. Glass tournament
Jordan Blankenship put the Patriots (1-2-1) on the board in the first minute.
Lindsey Wyatt made six saves for Patrick Henry, while Sam Frowen made five stops for Osbourn.
James River 8, Alleghany 0
LOW MOOR - Valintina Eonnini scored twice for the Knights (3-2). Alleghany fell to 0-1.
Salem 10, Albemarle 9
Salem's (1-0) Cate Pace scored six goals and had one assist to lead the Spartans in their victory against Albemarle on Wednesday.
Salem's goalie Emma Boyer had 19 saves.
