High school roundup: Late rally lifts Franklin County baseball over Patrick County

BASEBALL
Franklin Co. 8, Patrick Co. 4, 8 inn.
STUART - The Eagles (1-0) scored two runs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings, then scored four in the top of eighth to beat the Cougars (0-1).
Patrick County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off of four hits, including an RBI double by Nick Dalton.
Carson Clifton and Cole Trent each had an RBI single.
Bassett 11, Patrick Henry 0, 5 inn.
Kemper Terry drove in three runs to lead Bassett (1-0) over host Patrick Henry (0-1).
Terry finished the day with a double and two triples, as well as surrendering just three hits over four innings on the mound for the win. Terry surrendered just three hits to the Patriots.
Trevor Martin scored twice, and Logan Woodall added a two-run double for the Bengals.
Justin Snellings pitched four innings and allowed nine hits with one strikeout for PH.
Heritage 9, Salem 7
Dakota Wright hit a three-run double to spark a six-run fourth inning for visiting Heritage (1-0).
Marshall Davis added three hits and a run for the Pioneers and Kane Bryant picked up the win with six strikeouts over 4 1⁄3 innings of work.
Zach Mineroldi scored a pair of runs for Salem (0-1) and pitched three innings, allowing just one run.
Christiansburg 12, Giles 1
PEARISBURG - Andrew McFee hit a three-run home run as part of a five-run first inning for Christiansburg (1-0).
McFee finished the day with three hits and three runs scored, and Justin Bowler added two doubles and scored twice.
Lucas Stevers drove in a run for Giles (0-1).
Seth Wills pitched three innings and struck out five for the Blue Demons.
William Byrd 4, Glenvar 1
Tanner Willis and Brandon Harless each hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give host William Byrd (1-0) a season-opening win over Glenvar (0-1).
Sam Harren pitched 6 1⁄3 innings for the Terriers, allowing only four hits and striking out two.
Zack Duncan gave up three runs over four innings for Glenvar.
Glenvar scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning.
Auburn 14, Craig County 3
NEW CASTLE - Auburn (1-0) got a complete game from winning pitcher Gabe Spencer, who also had three hits, three RBIs and two runs. On the mound, he recorded 10 strikeouts and one walk. Also for Auburn, Allen Huff had two runs and an RBI, and Cody McNeil had three RBIs.
For the Rockets (0-1), Mason Smith had a hit an RBI.
The game opened up in the third inning, when Auburn scored eight runs off of five hits.
Galax 3, Floyd County 1
FLOYD - Nick Davis had two hits and an RBI, and Caleb Spurlin knocked in two runs, as the Maroon Tide (1-0) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh.
Stu Merdian pitched the first six innings for Galax, and Logan Beamer finished off the Buffaloes in the seventh.
Gus Underwood pitched for Floyd, holding Galax to 6 scoreless innings.
Westover Christian 12, William Fleming 0
The host Colonels lost their season opener.
SOFTBALL
Blacksburg 10, Radford 7
RADFORD - Lilly Potts drove in two runs on a triple in the fifth inning to help Blacksburg (1-0) over Radford (0-1).
Potts also earned the win with eight hits and a strikeout in a complete game. McKenna Gordon had three hits and two runs for Blacksburg.
Tori Gray finished with three hits with two RBIs for Radford. Lindsey Graham added a two-run double for the Bobcats.
Nikki Brewer pitched 3 1⁄3 innings and struck out three in the loss.
Christiansburg 11, Giles 1, 5 inn.
CHRISTIANSBURG - MaKennah Hellman had three hits, including a home run for Christiansburg (1-0).
The game was called after the Blue Demons scored five in the fifth inning and held Giles (0-1) to one behind solid pitching from Blue Demon Tiffany Brown, who recorded 10 strikeouts.
Patrick County 13, Franklin County 7
STUART - Kati Collins three hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning, and four RBIs for the Cougars.
Ebony Reynolds had two hits with a two-run homer in the fourth. The Cougars (1-0) had 13 hits, and winning pitcher Natalie Mitchell had two strikeouts, four walks, and allowed 12 hits.
Logan Barbour had five hits for the Eagles (0-1). Losing pitcher Haley Saul had three strikeouts, three walks and allowed 13 hits. The Eagles scored four runs in the fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate.
Northside 10, Salem 3
Taylor Carter hit a solo homer in the first inning, and then Northside (1-0) scored five runs in the forth inning.
Morgan Bruce had three hits and an RBI for the Vikings who had 12 hits. Ruthie Williams was the winning pitcher.
Haley Thomas had two doubles for the Spartans (0-1). Kelsey Johnson hit a two-run double in the third. Sarah LaFrancois had two hits and an RBI. Sam Smith struck our three for the host Spartans.
Patrick Henry 8, Pulaski County 7
Katie Dill hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to add some cushion to Patrick Henry's lead and ensure the win.
Dill had three hits, including two doubles, and had four RBIs for the Patriots (1-0).
Jordan Chrisley and Lauren Shumate each hit a home run for Pulaski County (0-1), with Chrisley hammering a three-run shot in the sixth inning.
Alexis Cox pitched six innings and allowed four hits and struck out one for PH, and Taylor Clifton earned the save for the Patriots. Courtney Beville pitched six innings, striking out six batters and allowing five hits for the Cougars.
Floyd County 11, Galax 1, 5 inn.
FLOYD - Dani Harris hit a two-run homer to highlight a five-run fifth inning for Floyd County (1-0).
Aimee Royal and Christene Phillips both drove in a run for the Buffaloes. Galax (0-1) manage just one hit against Floyd County pitcher Karlee Pendleton, who struck out five and walked three.
Auburn 5, Craig County 4
RINER - Auburn (1-0) scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to beat Craig County.
Amber Linkous had two hits with three RBIs. Olivia Cleary had two hits and an RBI, and Taylor Helms also had two hits. Relief pitcher Makayla Burlingame struck out eight, walked one and gave up two hits with no runs in 4 2⁄3 innings.
The Rockets (0-1) were led by Melia Hutton with three hits and two RBIs. Pitcher Ashley Dudding had five strikeouts, walked four and allowed seven hits.
BOYS SOCCER
Hidden Valley 3, Franklin County 0
ROCKY MOUNT - Senior Tyler Blankenship scored two goals to lead the Titans over the Eagles.
Adnan Sosic scored one goal and recorded one assist for Hidden Valley. Nick Lee and Brian Irvine each had an assist.
Hidden Valley keeper Will Bullington had eight saves.
Franklin County keeper Seth Jordan had 12 saves.
William Fleming 1, Staunton River 0
Daveon Fitzgerald scored the only goal of the game off of an assist from Miguel Parra to lead host William Fleming (1-0) over Staunton River (0-1).
Colonel keeper Moore Blou had 7 saves in the win.
Cave Spring 1, William Byrd 0
Led by Trevor Durham's first-half goal, Cave Spring defeated William Byrd.
The assist for the goal was awarded to Kyle Gunville. Knight keeper, Paul Murphy had two saves. Byrd's Tanner Weaver recorded three saves.
Salem 2, Northside 2
Vikings keeper Zach Large headed in a goal off a corner kick with under two minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
Logan Atkins scored the first goal for Northside (0-0-1), and Large made seven saves.
The Spartans' Connor Scro and Hayden Helm each had a goal and an assist. Andrew Franklin had four saves for Salem (0-0-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Patrick Henry 1, Cave Spring 0
Taylor Tazenner scored in the second half to lead the Patriots (1-0) over visiting Cave Spring (0-1).
The Patriots were given three yellow cards in the game, two going to Hope Bocchi. Patriot goalie Lindsey Wyatt recorded seven saves.
For the Knights, keeper Lauren Nepper had 10 save.
Franklin County 4, Hidden Valley 1
Three first-half goals led Franklin County to a season-opening win over host Hidden Valley.
Emma Blake opened the scoring for Hidden Valley (0-1), but Sydney Varney scored on a free kick with 20 minutes remaining in the first half for Franklin County (1-0). Allie Shepherd scored two minutes later, and Kelsey Angell added a goal five minutes later to give Franklin County a 3-1 lead at the half. Shakim Holland-Deskins scored in the second half for the Eagles.
Kayla Wright made five saves for the Eagles.
Blacksburg 3, Radford 0
BLACKSBURG - Morgan Evans scored a pair of goals to lead Blacksburg (1-0) by Radford (0-1).
Keegan Bickel scored the third goal for the Bruins, and Cassidy McRorie added two assists.
Laura Albert and Mary Kate Evans stopped three shots each for the Bruins. Amanda Joyce stopped 12 shots for the Bobcats.
Giles 2, George Wythe 1
WYTHEVILLE - The Spartans (1-0) scored both goals in the first half off of corner kicks.
Afton Scott scored the first goal, and Briana Massaro had the second goal. Beth Stump made two saves for Giles.
The Maroons (0-1) cut into Giles' lead when Katie Frazier scored at the end of a long sprint, breaking through the defense and slipping it past the keeper.
Maria Stoker had seven saves.
